Sharm El Sheikh: Events & Festivals

Honest answer first: Sharm el-Sheikh doesn’t run its own recurring festival circuit the way some destinations do, no confirmed food festival, folklore festival or annual diving expo tied specifically to this city. What actually shapes a trip here is Ramadan’s calendar, Egypt’s national and religious holidays, and one genuinely major event the city hosted a few years back.
What actually affects a Sharm trip
| Event | Timing | Effect on visitors |
|---|---|---|
| Ramadan | ~18 Feb-19 Mar 2026 (verify, lunar-based) | Reduced daytime service outside resorts; resorts serve tourists largely as normal |
| Eid al-Fitr / Eid al-Adha | Dates shift yearly with the lunar calendar | Public holidays, busier domestic travel, some local closures |
| COP27 legacy | Hosted Nov 2022, one-off | No recurring event, but shaped the city’s convention-center profile |
| New Year’s Eve | 31 Dec | Resort-run parties and fireworks, not a citywide festival |
Ramadan is the one date worth planning around
Ramadan is expected to run roughly 18 February to 19 March 2026, based on the Umm al-Qura calendar estimate, though the actual dates depend on lunar sighting and should be confirmed closer to your trip. During it, expect reduced daytime restaurant and bar service away from the resort hotels, since observant locals fast from sunrise to sunset, while resort hotels themselves continue serving tourists largely as normal. Evenings during Ramadan tend to be livelier rather than quieter, once the daily fast breaks.
Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha shift the crowds, not the sights
Both Eid holidays move with the lunar calendar and mark the end of Ramadan and the Hajj season respectively; expect a public holiday atmosphere, some local business closures, and a bump in domestic Egyptian travel to Red Sea resorts around these dates (verify exact 2026 dates closer to booking). Nothing about the diving, the Old Market or the day trips changes structurally, but book resort rooms and boat trips slightly further ahead if your dates overlap.
COP27 put Sharm on the world stage once
The UN Climate Change Conference, COP27, ran 6-20 November 2022 at the Sharm International Convention Centre, drawing roughly 33,449 participants and 90-plus heads of state, the second-largest COP ever held at that point and the first African-hosted COP since 2016. It isn’t a recurring event and there’s no annual “climate week” to plan a trip around, but it’s part of why the city has convention-grade infrastructure alongside its resort scene, and it’s a reasonable talking point if you’re curious about the skyline of hotels beyond Naama Bay.
New Year’s Eve is a resort thing, not a city thing
Resorts across Sharm run their own New Year’s Eve parties, fireworks over the water, and festive dinners, but this is hotel-by-hotel programming rather than one citywide event with a fixed schedule or venue. If you want a specific New Year’s experience, check directly with your hotel rather than assuming a public countdown exists somewhere in town.
If you want a genuine festival trip, look elsewhere in Egypt
Cairo and other Egyptian cities run more of a conventional festival and cultural-events calendar than Sharm does; if that’s specifically what you’re after, treat Sharm as the beach-and-reef half of a longer Egypt trip rather than the festival stop. Our day trips guide covers what a flight-based Cairo add-on realistically involves.
For the fuller trip plan around any of these dates, see our Sharm el-Sheikh guide and travel tips , which covers Ramadan etiquette in more depth. Check current Sharm el-Sheikh hotel rates before Eid or New Year’s dates push prices up.
One concrete move: if avoiding daytime restaurant closures matters to you, simply avoid the Ramadan window entirely rather than trying to plan around it; resort-based dining still works fine during Ramadan, but the rest of the city’s food scene runs on a different schedule that month.
