1. Cairo Itself, as the Base
Whatever else you add, most trips still start and end with a few days in the city: Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum (fully open, the complete Tutankhamun collection displayed together for the first time), Islamic Cairo’s mosques and markets, and Coptic Cairo’s churches and museums. 2. Saqqara, Memphis, and Dahshur: the Other Pyramids
The clean, classic day trip, about an hour each way. Saqqara holds the Step Pyramid of Djoser, one of the world’s oldest large stone structures. Memphis, once Egypt’s ancient capital, is now mostly an open-air museum. Dahshur adds the Bent and Red Pyramids, the engineering trial-and-error that led to Giza’s true pyramid form. 3. Alexandria
A Mediterranean day trip by train from Ramses Station, roughly 2 to 3 hours each way, worth knowing that’s a long day round-trip; an overnight is genuinely more comfortable if your schedule allows it. 5. Luxor by Air

6. Aswan by Air
About 1 hour 30 minutes by air from Cairo, Aswan is usually paired with Luxor as part of the same onward leg rather than visited alone.

8. A Nile Cruise or the Watania Sleeper Train
A 3 to 4 night Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan, taking in Kom Ombo and Edfu along the way, is the classic way to link the two without flying twice. The Watania sleeper train (Cairo to Luxor to Aswan, overnight) is the alternative if you’d rather not fly at all. Either way, frame this as a 3 to 4 day-plus addition to your trip, not something to squeeze into a Cairo-based week.
Money, Visas, and Getting Around
The Egyptian pound is hard volatile, around 50 EGP to the dollar as of Aug 2026 after a 2024 float, well above the old roughly 30 rate, so treat every EGP figure here as a rough USD-equivalent and verify the current rate before you travel. The e-visa or visa on arrival, through the official portal visa2egypt.gov.eg only, costs $30 single entry or $65 multiple entry, valid 30 days.
