Romantic Zurich: Spa, Cruise and Dinner
Zurich suits couples who like warm water, good dinners and views over a lake and rooftops. The mood is quiet and polished rather than showy. Prices are in Swiss francs (CHF).
A thermal soak with a rooftop view
The Hürlimannbad & Spa at Brandschenkestrasse 150 uses the vaulted stone cellars of a former brewery. Thermal pools sit under brick arches, and the heated rooftop pool looks over the city, the lake and the distant Alps. Adult entry is about CHF 42, and the Roman-Irish ritual (a stepped circuit of steam, scrub and plunge) costs about CHF 68 per person. Book a time slot online, since capacity is limited, and check Friday to Sunday hours. An evening visit is the best time for the lit-up skyline.
An evening on Lake Zurich
Boats leave from Bürkliplatz. Regular sailings are seasonal and are reduced when the water is low, so check zsg.ch for the evening timetable. The operator also runs dinner cruises, such as fondue or gourmet sailings, which need an advance reservation and have been listed at roughly CHF 65 to 95 per person. Confirm both on the day of booking.
Dinner among paintings
Kronenhalle, at Rämistrasse 4 near Bellevue, has been a Zurich institution since 1924. Original works by artists such as Chagall, Miró, Matisse and Picasso hang on the wood-panelled walls. It is open daily from 12:00 to 24:00, and the mahogany bar next door is a good place for a drink. Book ahead for dinner. A different mood is Zunfthaus zur Waag at Münsterhof 8, a guild house facing the Fraumünster, which is closed on Sundays.
Up to the Dolder
Take a tram to Römerhof and then the green Dolderbahn rack railway, run by the city transport company, up to The Dolder Grand and the beech woods of the Adlisberg. Walk the forest paths for views over the city and the lake. Check the fare and timetable before you set out.
A quiet walk at dusk
Lindenhof is a tree-shaded terrace above the river with the classic view of the Old Town and the church towers, and it is free to visit at any hour. From there you can drift down the lanes of Schipfe beside the Limmat. See the couple activities page for more ideas.
Not in season
River and lake baths are a summer pleasure and are closed from autumn. Do not swim in the Limmat or the lake outside an official bath. The current is strong and entering the water is banned in several central stretches.
Where to stay
Lake views and old-town lanes are the two classic settings. A search for hotels in Zurich will show current rates, and zuerich.com lists current restaurant details.
