Zurich With Kids: Zoo, Museums, Playgrounds
Zurich is an easy city to visit with children: the zoo is large, several museums are hands-on, and the lake has free playgrounds. Prices are in Swiss francs (CHF), and the figures for the zoo and Technorama come from secondary sources, so confirm them before you go.
Zoo Zürich
The zoo is at Zürichbergstrasse 221, reached by tram 6 to the Zoo stop. Plan on a full day. The Masoala Rainforest hall is a heated indoor rainforest with free-roaming lemurs, chameleons and birds, the Kaeng Krachan park holds Asian elephants, and the Lewa Savanne is an open African landscape. Reported prices are about CHF 32 for adults, CHF 27 for ages 13 to 17, CHF 18 for ages 6 to 12, CHF 85 for a family day pass, and free for under-6s. Masoala opens a little later than the rest of the zoo, and winter hours are shorter.
FIFA Museum
Seestrasse 27, opposite Bahnhof Enge, is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00. It displays the original World Cup trophy, with interactive games for older children. Adult entry is about CHF 26 and children aged 7 to 15 pay about CHF 15. It is free with a Zürich Card.
Technorama in Winterthur
Technorama, about 30 minutes away, is a large hands-on science centre. Adults pay about CHF 33 to 34 and children aged 6 to 15 about CHF 21. The outdoor park is open from April to October.
Lindt Home of Chocolate
Children aged 8 to 15 pay CHF 10, under-8s go in free, and adults pay CHF 17. Book a timed ticket online. See the activities page for more detail.
Free playground time
The Blatterwiese playground at Zürichhorn has wooden climbing structures and water pumps on the lakeside promenade. Check the tram stop, as lines 2 and 4 serve the area. The lakeside gardens at Bürkliplatz are good for a picnic.
Boats for children
The Limmat boat has a glass roof and takes about 25 minutes each way. It costs about CHF 4.60 for adults and CHF 3.20 reduced, runs from April to October, and may pause in low water, so check zsg.ch. A Zürich Card for ages 6 to 15 costs CHF 19 for 24 hours or CHF 37 for 72 hours, and under-6s are free.
Water safety
Do not let children near the Limmat except at official baths, which are open only in summer. The river current is strong, and the banks near the main station and bridges are off limits for swimming.
