Romantic Stavanger: Dinners and Fjord Views
Stavanger suits a romantic trip built around food, water and evening light rather than sightseeing. Prices are in Norwegian kroner (NOK), and the best tables need booking well ahead.
A dinner on Sør-Hidle
Flor og Fjære is a garden island reached by a private boat from Bekhuskaien. The crossing takes about 20 minutes, and the visit includes a guided garden walk and a dinner. The whole outing lasts about five hours. The 2027 season runs from 8 May to 18 September. The site lists 1,990 NOK from Monday to Friday and 2,290 NOK on Saturday, including the tour, dinner and boat. Booking is required.
Michelin-starred tables
Stavanger has an unusually strong restaurant scene for its size. RE-NAA at Nordbøgata 8, led by chef Sven Erik Renaa, is reported to hold three Michelin stars, the only restaurant with that rating in Norway outside Oslo. Sabi Omakase and K2 are reported with one star each, and K2 also carries a Green Star. Star counts come from secondary sources, so check restaurantrenaa.no and the Michelin Guide, and book weeks ahead.
On the water
The Rødne electric catamaran cruise passes under Preikestolen and the Hengjanefossen waterfall in about 3 to 3.5 hours for 890 NOK (Rødne ). Check the schedule for your dates. A floating sauna from Damp at Svankevigå or Hinna must be booked ahead, and the fjord dip afterwards is cold. See dampsauna.no .
Evening walks
The white wooden houses of Gamle Stavanger are private homes, so keep your voices low and stay on the lanes. Vågen, the inner harbour, is a pleasant place for a walk at dusk, and Fargegaten has small bars such as Hanekam and Bøker og Børst.
Jæren sunsets
Solastranden, near the airport, faces west over the North Sea. Sola Strand Hotel, dating from 1914, stands beside the beach. The water is cold and the waves can be strong, so a sunset walk on the sand is better than a swim.
A cruise for two on Lysefjord and a hike at first light
The fjord looks best from the water in clear weather, and early morning is the quietest time on the trails. Take warm layers, because the temperature on the water is lower than in town even in summer.
Preikestolen at sunrise
A very early start can bring quiet on the Preikestolen trail, which is 7.6 km return and takes 3 to 4 hours. Parking at BaseCamp costs 275 NOK for a day. The plateau has no fence, so keep back from the edge and avoid it in wind, rain or ice.
