Romantic Reykjavik for Couples
Romance in Reykjavik tends to be warm water against cold air: a lagoon at the edge of the sea, a rooftop hot tub at dusk, a dinner you booked weeks ago. Plan the evenings first and fit the days around them.
Sky Lagoon at the water’s edge
Sky Lagoon in Kópavogur, a short drive from the centre, has a 70 m infinity pool looking out over the North Atlantic. Two passes exist: Saman (shared changing) and Sér (private changing), and both include the Skjól Ritual, a sequence of cold plunge, sauna, mist and steam. Minimum age is 12. Prices vary by slot and season, with reported starting figures around ISK 14,000 for Saman and ISK 16,000 for Sér. Book a late-afternoon slot on skylagoon.com and aim to be in the water at sunset.
The Blue Lagoon for a special day
The Blue Lagoon is about 50 km from the city on the Reykjanes Peninsula, so treat it as a half-day outing. Entry is by timed, pre-booked slot only, with Comfort, Premium and Signature tiers, and pricing that depends on date and time. Read the options at bluelagoon.com . Eruptions on the peninsula can restart at short notice, so check safetravel.is before you leave. Grindavík itself is closed to sightseers.
The city’s own hot tubs
Sundhöllin, the 1937 pool on Barónsstígur, has rooftop hot tubs with a view over the roofs. Adult entry is ISK 1,500 and everyone showers before swimming. It is an easy, inexpensive evening, and the water in the tubs runs from 38 to 44 degrees.
Northern lights for two
From about September to April, small-group minibus tours leave after 21:30 and chase clear sky. Elding also runs northern lights boat cruises from 1 September to 15 April. The lights cannot be guaranteed, and between late May and late July the sky never gets dark enough, so winter and shoulder-season couples have the edge. Browse northern lights tours and book two nights if you can.
Dinner
Dill on Laugavegur 28 serves a New Nordic tasting menu with wild and fermented ingredients, and tables fill months ahead. Matarkjallarinn (the Food Cellar) occupies a cellar on Aðalstræti with live piano. Grillmarkaðurinn cooks over open charcoal with Icelandic fish and meat. Check each restaurant’s website for its current menu and price, and reserve early.
A free walk at golden hour
The Sun Voyager sculpture on the Sæbraut promenade is best at sunset, or under the midnight sun in June. From there the waterfront path leads west past Harpa. Hand in hand, it is a 20-minute stroll.
Practical notes
Prices are in ISK, and cards work almost everywhere. Hotels add a lodging tax of ISK 800 per room per night at checkout. The Reykjavik City Card (ISK 6,100 for 24 hours) includes the city pools if you want a cheap soak. For a longer stay, see the three-day itinerary and the sightseeing page .
Verdict: if you can book only one thing, book Sky Lagoon for the hour before sunset. It gives the best view for the price of the whole city, and winter couples can stack the lights on top.
