Multi-Day Trips From Reykjavik
Three journeys cover most multi-day plans from Reykjavik: a two-day overnight on the South Coast, a Westfjords loop of four to six days, and the full Ring Road in a week or more. Each one starts with a hotel in the capital and a rental car or a guided tour.
Two days on the South Coast
Day one runs along Route 1 past Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss to Reynisfjara and a night in Vík or Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Day two continues to Skaftafell and the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon with its floating icebergs, then back to the city. The overnight removes the 10 to 12 hour rush of a single-day coach trip and lets you see the lagoon in softer morning light.
Reynisfjara needs respect. Sneaker waves surge far up the beach, so stay at least 30 m from the water and never turn your back on the sea. The car park has a three-light warning system, and the basalt columns and Hálsanefshellir cave are closed when it shows red. Check safetravel.is before you set off.
Glacier hikes at Skaftafell and Sólheimajökull are guided only. Crevasses hide under snow bridges, and the guides supply crampons, ice axes and helmets. Natural ice cave tours run from about mid-October or November to March. Search glacier and ice cave tours for dates, and do not enter a cave without a guide.
Westfjords, four to six days
Remote fjords, the tiered Dynjandi waterfall and the Látrabjarg bird cliffs make this the most dramatic corner of the country. It suits June to August, because mountain passes close under snow in other months. Distances are long and services thin, so fill the tank whenever you can.
The Ring Road, seven to ten days
Route 1 circles the island for 1,322 km. A common order is the South Coast, Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón, the Eastfjords, Lake Mývatn and Dettifoss, Akureyri, and then back through the west. June to September is the easy window with long daylight and a paved route that a normal car can handle. In winter you need to read the forecast every morning, carry flexible days, and consider a 4x4 or a guided tour.
Driving rules that matter
- Wind gusts of 25 to 35 m/s are common. Open car doors with both hands, because a gust can bend the door past its hinge and rental insurance may not cover it.
- F-roads (such as F26 and F35) are for 4x4 vehicles only and are usually closed until mid-June.
- Rivers on F-roads are not bridged, and water damage is not covered by standard rental insurance.
- Check road status at road.is and weather at vedur.is each morning.

Money and beds
Prices are in ISK and cards work almost everywhere. Hotels and guesthouses add a lodging tax of ISK 800 per unit per night, which is separate from the room rate and usually shows up at checkout. Campsites pay ISK 400. Book Vík and Skaftafell beds early in summer.
Before you go
Read the day trips page to decide which single-day stops to fold into a longer route, and see the three-day itinerary for the city days that bookend the road.
Verdict: take the two-day South Coast overnight if you only have a long weekend. It is the best return on driving time anywhere near the capital.
