Reykjavik Iceland 2 Day Self-Drive Itinerary
Two days is enough for exactly two things done properly: a pre-booked Blue Lagoon soak folded into your arrival, and a self-drive Golden Circle day. That’s it, that’s the plan. Anyone promising you the South Coast too in 48 hours is selling you a bus window, not a day trip. For more time, see the 3 day version or the full day trips guide .
Book these before you go
- The Blue Lagoon, pre-booked only and gone 3 to 4 weeks ahead in peak season: book Blue Lagoon tickets
- A Golden Circle tour if you’d rather not drive: check the Golden Circle full-day tour
- A downtown hotel, since summer books out weeks ahead: check rates on Booking.com
Day 1: Arrival and the Blue Lagoon
Land at Keflavik and go straight to the Blue Lagoon rather than into town first. It sits 20 minutes (23km) from the airport and 50km (40 minutes) from Reykjavik, so this order saves you a second trip back out to the peninsula later. Your slot needs to be booked weeks ahead, since walk-up entry doesn’t exist at any price tier: ISK 11,990 for Comfort (about $96) up to 18,490 for Signature (about $149). Check current status on safetravel.is before you go; the peninsula has had repeated volcanic activity since December 2023, and while there was no active eruption as of mid-2026, both Grindavik and the lagoon have closed on short notice before.
Transfer into Reykjavik afterward and check into a hotel inside the 101 postcode. Keep dinner simple, since tomorrow starts early.
Day 2: Golden Circle and departure
Thingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss make up the classic 230km round trip, 6 to 8 hours with stops, entirely on paved roads with no 4x4 needed. Thingvellir is about 45km (1 hour) out, the rift valley where the North American and Eurasian plates visibly pull apart. Geysir is a further 100km (1 hour 40) on, where Strokkur erupts every 5 to 10 minutes. Gullfoss is 10 more minutes north. Renting a car costs a fraction of a guided seat for a route this straightforward and well signed.
Head back to Keflavik with at least 2.5 hours before an international flight; Keflavik’s security queues run long in peak summer months.

Common questions
Is 2 days enough for a Reykjavik Iceland trip?
For exactly two things, yes: the Blue Lagoon and the Golden Circle. What you’ll miss is the South Coast, which alone is an 11 to 12 hour day and doesn’t fit alongside anything else. The 3 day itinerary adds it properly instead of rushing it into this one.
Should the Blue Lagoon go on Day 1 or Day 2?
Day 1, on arrival, works better for most travelers, since it removes the risk of a delayed departure flight cutting your slot short. It also sits closer to the airport than to the city, so doing it first means one transfer instead of two.
Book the Blue Lagoon the moment your dates are fixed, then rent a car for the Golden Circle rather than a bus seat. Visiticeland.com is the official planning reference, and bluelagoon.com has the current tier prices if either has shifted by the time you land.
