Day Trips from Port of Spain and Crown Point
As of October 2026, the US State Department advises reconsidering travel to Trinidad and Tobago because of crime. The UK FCDO says violent crime is high and asks for particular caution in downtown Port of Spain, Carenage, Sea Lots, Belmont, Laventille, Morvant, Beetham, Barataria, Cocorite and the interior of Queen’s Park Savannah. Visit the city centre by day, use registered taxis, do not walk alone at night, and check FCDO advice and travel.state.gov before you book.
Day trips by island
Trinidad day trips start from Port of Spain, and Tobago day trips start from Crown Point or Scarborough. Each trip below fits in a day, and a hired driver or a registered taxi is the usual way to link the stops. Prices are in Trinidad and Tobago dollars (TT$).
Maracas Bay (Trinidad)
The drive from Port of Spain over the Saddle Road takes about 45 to 60 minutes each way, and weekends can back up. Bake and shark from the beach stalls is the local lunch, and Richard’s is the best-known stall. Ask the price at the stall, since it changes. Maracas Bay has surf and rip currents, and lifeguard cover is thin and inconsistent, so swim only where lifeguards are posted and obey the flags. Maracas Falls is a separate guided hike.
Central Trinidad temples and museum
Allow four to five hours with a hired driver. The Temple in the Sea at Waterloo was begun by Sewdass Sadhu in 1947, who carried stones and cement out by bicycle, and the causeway and temple were finished in 1952. He died in 1970, and the temple was rebuilt in 1995, 100 yards farther out than the original. It is an active place of worship, so cover shoulders and knees and take your shoes off. The Hanuman Murti at the Dattatreya Yoga Centre on Orange Field Road in Carapichaima stands 85 ft tall and was consecrated in June 2003. Listed hours are 09:00 to 12:00 and 17:00 to 19:00, and shoes come off here too. The Indian Caribbean Museum in Waterloo has free entry, so check its hours on the day.
Main Ridge and Gilpin Trace (Tobago)
From Crown Point, head inland to the Main Ridge Forest Reserve for a guided forest walk on the Gilpin Trace. Guides usually charge about TT$160 for a walk of around 1.5 hours or about TT$240 for about two hours. About 210 bird species have been recorded in the reserve.
Argyle Falls and Roxborough (Tobago)
Roxborough is on the windward coast, about 45 minutes from Scarborough. Admission to Argyle Falls is TT$60 at the Roxborough Visitor Service Co-operative booth, the guide is included with a tip expected, and the walk in takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Tobago Cocoa Estate is nearby and tours run only on published dates.
Castara and Englishman’s Bay (Tobago)
Castara is a fishing village on the leeward coast, with morning seine-net pulls and a bonfire on Thursday nights. Englishman’s Bay is calm and undeveloped.
Chacachacare from Chaguaramas
Chacachacare is reached only by boat from Chaguaramas. It was a leprosarium run by the Dominican Sisters from 1922 to 1984, and the visit calls for a quiet, respectful approach rather than a party cruise. Go with an operator who handles landing permission.
Tips
- Leave early for Maracas to beat the weekend traffic.
- Carry TT$ cash for stalls, booths and small entry fees.
- Use registered taxis in Port of Spain and agree the fare before you set off.
