Overnight Trips in Trinidad and Tobago
As of October 2026, the US State Department advises reconsidering travel to Trinidad and Tobago because of crime. The UK FCDO says violent crime is high and asks for particular caution in downtown Port of Spain, Carenage, Sea Lots, Belmont, Laventille, Morvant, Beetham, Barataria, Cocorite and the interior of Queen’s Park Savannah. Visit the city centre by day, use registered taxis, do not walk alone at night, and check FCDO advice and travel.state.gov before you book.
Multi-day trips in Trinidad and Tobago
The country is two islands, so the best multi-day trips are built around either one island or a crossing between them. Costs are in Trinidad and Tobago dollars (TT$), about TT$6.8 to US$1.
A two-island week
Spend the first days in Trinidad for Port of Spain, the Caroni Bird Sanctuary, Asa Wright and Maracas, then cross to Tobago for Buccoo Reef, the Main Ridge Forest Reserve, Argyle Falls and Speyside. Plan the Trinidad days around daylight, since the FCDO asks for particular caution in parts of Port of Spain.
Getting between the islands
The fast ferry from the Port of Spain Ferry Terminal on Wrightson Road to Scarborough takes 3 to 3 1/2 hours. Adult economy is TT$75 one way and TT$150 return, a child aged 3 to 11 pays TT$50 one way and TT$100 return, and premium class for an adult is TT$150 one way and TT$300 return. Infants are free but need a ticket. The earliest sailing leaves about 06:30 and the last passenger sailing about 16:00, with only one passenger vessel on Wednesdays. Schedules change often, so check www.ttitferry.com and its fares page before you buy.
A car travelling with its driver on the passenger ferries costs TT$146.73 one way or TT$244.58 return on top of the passenger ticket. Caribbean Airlines is the only nonstop air operator, flying Piarco to Crown Point in about 25 minutes. Fares vary, so check with the airline.
Northeast Trinidad turtle weekend
From March to August, pair Matura with Nature Seekers and Grande Riviere in one weekend, and sleep near the beach at Grande Riviere. The HADCO-run Mt Plaisir Estate Hotel lists turtle nesting from its beach. The Galera Point lighthouse is on the route. Beds fill in season, so book ahead. Beach rules apply: no lights or flash, and no touching turtles.
An Asa Wright overnight
The ecolodge has 29 rooms and is booked through HADCO at hadcoexperiences.com . A day pass is TT$550 for ages 13 and over.
Castara on the Tobago north coast
Castara is a fishing village on Tobago’s leeward coast with hillside cottages. Castara Retreats is listed on the major booking sites. The Thursday-night bonfire and the morning seine-net pulls give the stay a rhythm of its own.
Speyside dive base
Allow two or three days around Kelleston Drain and Japanese Gardens, with conditions usually best from about January to May. Extra Divers and Tobago Dive Experience both operate from Speyside.
Carnival week
Carnival 2027 falls on Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 February, with Dimanche Gras on Sunday 7 February and Ash Wednesday on 10 February. Book flights, the ferry and beds months ahead. The FCDO notes that opportunistic crime rises at Carnival, so keep valuables out of sight.
