Romantic Escapes in Dhaka and Sreemangal
Travel advisory, as of October 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts (Rangamati, Khagrachari and Bandarban), and the US warns against travel there. The UK describes terrorist attacks as very likely, and says hartals (strikes) and demonstrations can turn violent quickly, so avoid them. Street crime has risen since 2024, with bag snatching from motorbikes and CNG auto-rickshaws, so take care with phones and jewellery after dark. Read the FCDO advice and travel.state.gov before booking.
Romance in a megacity
Dhaka is a loud, crowded capital, and it has few traditional romantic settings. Couples are better served by a comfortable base, a good dinner and a short escape to the tea country than by sightseeing in the heat and traffic. This page covers the small number of options that work, and it is honest about the ones that do not.
Five-star hotels
International hotels are the main source of quiet in the capital. The Westin Dhaka is in Gulshan, the diplomatic and business district in the north. InterContinental Dhaka stands on Minto Road in the former Ruposhi Bangla building and opened in December 2018 as an IHG property. Amari Dhaka is another listed option. Hotel restaurants serve Bengali and international menus, with a tasting menu or buffet typically costing several thousand taka per person. Book a room with a view and ask the front desk to arrange a car and driver for the evening, as street CNGs are best avoided at night. You can compare stays at Booking.com .
An evening at Dhanmondi Lake
Rabindra Sarobar, beside Dhanmondi Lake, is where locals walk and sit at dusk, and tea stalls and sometimes live folk or Rabindra Sangeet music appear in the evening. It is a pleasant stroll, not a scenic lake, since the water is not clean. Go while it is still light, keep valuables out of sight and leave before it gets late.
A casual dinner
For a relaxed, authentic meal, Haji Biryani in Old Dhaka (established 1939, Kazi Alauddin Road) and Nanna Biryani are well-known mutton biryani places. Check the signboard, as copycat shops use similar names. Eat freshly cooked dishes only and skip the street drinks.
A train to the tea estates
Sreemangal, in the north-east, is the best true getaway reachable from Dhaka. The Parabat or Upaban Express from Kamalapur takes about 4.5 to 5 hours. Rolling tea gardens, forest walks and quiet mornings make it feel a long way from the capital. Grand Sultan Tea Resort and Golf is a listed resort in the area. Winter is the most comfortable season. See stays at Booking.com and check recent reviews for facilities.
What to skip
The Buriganga River at Old Dhaka is polluted and busy with heavy passenger launches, and fatal collisions have occurred. Do not book a sunset boat ride or a houseboat there.
