Romantic Bolivia: Salt Hotels and Wineries
Travel advisory, as of October 2026. A nationwide state of exception was decreed in June 2026. Protests and road blockades can close routes, including roads to airports, at short notice, and fuel shortages are regular, so give a romantic trip slack for delays. The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Chapare Province, including Villa Tunari, and the US warns against travel there. Check the FCDO advice and travel.state.gov before booking.
Romance in Bolivia
Bolivia suits couples who prefer big skies and quiet stays to resort comforts. The settings are a hotel made of salt, an island sunset on a high lake, a whitewashed colonial courtyard and a wine valley. Rooms are best booked ahead for dates you cannot move, and flights or transfers need a cushion for strikes.
Salt hotels near Uyuni
Several hotels near the edge of the Salar de Uyuni are built from salt blocks, including walls, beds and furniture. Palacio de Sal is listed at about US$370 to 450 a night, and Hotel Luna Salada is another established option nearby. Both are reached by road from the town of Uyuni, which is itself a long journey or a flight from La Paz.
On a clear night the sky above the flat is dark and full of stars. After rain, a thin layer of water makes the flat reflect the sky, which is at its best from about December to April, but that is also when some routes close. In the dry months nights drop well below freezing, so bring heavy layers and expect heating to be modest. The plateau is above 3,600 m, so spend a night or two at lower altitude first and see a doctor about altitude before travelling. Bring cash, as ATMs in town are often empty. Prices for tours are best quoted in US dollars, because the boliviano floated to about 12 to the dollar in 2026.
Sunset on Isla del Sol
On Lake Titicaca, the southern village of Yumani has stone paths, terraces and open views over the water. Take a boat from Copacabana, stay a night and watch the light fade over the Cordillera Real. Community entry fees are small, about Bs 10 to 15 per sector, in cash. The northern end has had access disputes, so ask in Copacabana the day before whether it is open. Before boarding any lake boat, check that life jackets are available. The water is cold year round.
A courtyard stay in Sucre
Sucre is white, quiet and lower than La Paz at about 2,810 m, which makes it a gentler place for couples to spend a few days. Parador Santa Maria la Real is listed in a restored colonial house with courtyards, and the city centre is a short walk from the main square. Mirador de la Recoleta is a favourite spot at sunset.
Tarija wine country
South of the main tourist trail, the Valle de la Concepcion is known for high-altitude wine and singani, the grape spirit. Bodegas such as Campos de Solana and Kohlberg welcome visitors, and Casa Real is a singani distillery. Check opening hours and tasting prices by phone, because small producers vary, and arrange a driver rather than driving after tastings.
