Multi-Day Trips from Dhaka by Rail and River
Travel advisory, as of October 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts (Rangamati, Khagrachari and Bandarban), and the US warns against travel there; keep it out of any itinerary. The UK describes terrorist attacks as very likely, and says hartals and demonstrations can turn violent quickly. Overcrowded ferries and launches are also flagged. Street crime has risen since 2024. Read the FCDO advice and travel.state.gov before booking.
Trips of two to four days
Bangladesh is a river delta, and the classic longer trips from Dhaka use trains and boats. Distances look small on a map but travel is slow, so build in buffer days. Foreign visitors should get the tourist e-visa before arrival, since visa on arrival covers only narrow categories. Check current rules before you fly.
Sreemangal tea country, 2 to 3 days
Sreemangal, in the north-east, is the tea capital of Bangladesh. The Parabat or Upaban Express from Kamalapur station takes about 4.5 to 5 hours. The area has rolling tea estates that you can walk or cycle through, and Lawachara National Park, a forest where the endangered western hoolock gibbon lives. Go with a local guide in the park and do not feed wildlife. Grand Sultan Tea Resort and Golf is a listed hotel in the area, and you can compare places to stay at Booking.com .
PS Mahsud river cruise to Barishal
The old Dhaka to Khulna Rocket service has ended. The heritage paddle steamer PS Mahsud was relaunched in November 2025 as a weekly pleasure cruise between Dhaka and Barishal, announced by BIWTC as leaving Sadarghat on Friday morning. Whether it runs in 2026, and the fares and booking method, are not confirmed, so ask BIWTC or a reputable agent before you plan around it. Ordinary BIWTC overnight launches to Barishal also exist, but overcrowding and falsified safety certificates are a known problem. Choose reputable operators, travel in daylight where you can, and ask for a life jacket.
Sundarbans, 3 to 4 days
The Sundarbans are the world’s largest mangrove forest and a World Heritage site. This is not a day trip. Trips run as a multi-day boat journey from Khulna or Mongla, with a Forest Department permit arranged by your tour operator. The forest is closed to all visitors every year from 1 June to 31 August and reopens on 1 September. November to February is the best season. Operators quote roughly 18,000 to 35,000 BDT for three days all-inclusive, but treat that as a rough guide and ask what the permit and fees cover. Wildlife includes spotted deer, estuarine crocodiles and river dolphins, so go for the mangrove scenery and the boat journey itself.
Cox’s Bazar and the south-east
Cox’s Bazar is a separate destination, not a Dhaka add-on. The ordinary express train from Kamalapur takes about 8 hours and has run since December 2023. It is not high-speed. St Martin’s Island ferries are seasonal. Give the coast its own trip of at least four days.
Planning notes
Book trains early, bring cash for small towns, and carry sealed bottled water. Winter air in Dhaka is poor, so leaving the city in the cool season has an extra benefit. Do not stack the Sundarbans, Sreemangal and the coast into one week.
