Panama Multi-Day Trips by Region
Panama’s real regional destinations sit far enough from the capital that a single day never covers them properly. Three hubs are worth the extra nights: Guna Yala, Bocas del Toro, and the Chiriquí highlands around Boquete.
Guna Yala (San Blas Islands), 2 to 3 days
A shared 4x4 picks up from Panama City lodging around 05:00 and crosses the cordillera to Puerto Cartí in about 2.5 hours, $50-60 round trip per person. At Cartí, a motorized dugout canoe (panga) runs $20-40 round trip to your island. Entry to the Guna comarca costs $20-22 in tax plus a separate $2-5 Cartí port fee, cash only, original passport required. Cabañas on islands such as Isla Chichime or Isla Diablo run $80-130 a night with three rustic meals included, plus day trips to neighboring sandbars. Snorkeling and free-diving are the water activities on offer; the Guna Congress bans scuba diving in the comarca.
Bocas del Toro, 3 to 4 days
Air Panama flies Albrook (PAC) to Isla Colón (BOC) in 50 minutes, airpanama.com , $110-150 one way; domestic flights never depart from Tocumen. The bus-and-boat route runs an overnight coach from Albrook Terminal to Almirante (10 hours, about $28) plus a 30-minute water taxi to Bocas Town ($6.00). Once there, water taxis connect Bocas Town, Isla Carenero ($1-2), and Old Bank on Isla Bastimentos ($4-5), and a guided day boat covers Cayo Coral snorkeling and Cayos Zapatilla inside Bastimentos Marine National Park ($30-40 pp plus $10 park fee). Boquete and Chiriquí, 3 days
A 50-minute flight from Albrook to David (DAV), $90-130 one way, connects to a 45-minute taxi or bus to Boquete ($2 bus, $30 taxi); the 7-hour Albrook-to-David bus runs $15-18 for a slower alternative. A typical three-day pattern: day one for a Geisha coffee cupping tour and cloud forest hanging bridges; day two for the 9 km Sendero Los Quetzales trail connecting Boquete to Cerro Punta ($5 park entry, a guide is worth it, permits and trail status posted at MiAmbiente’s site ); day three for Caldera hot springs ($3.00 entry) and whitewater rafting on the Chiriquí Viejo.
Panama Canal transit, a day within a trip
A full ocean-to-ocean canal transit by scheduled passenger vessel runs 10-12 hours, $180-220 per adult, and pairs naturally with either end of a Bocas or Boquete trip since it starts and ends near Panama City.
The verdict
Guna Yala rewards two full nights over one, since the transfer alone eats most of a single day; Boquete’s three-day pattern above uses the transit time productively on both ends.
