Panama City packs more family-friendly ground into a short radius than the surrounding highlands or islands do, which makes it the practical base for a trip with kids. The venues below are real, working attractions with posted admission.
Biomuseo, Amador Causeway
Frank Gehry’s only Latin American building, a folded, brightly painted roofline over eight galleries tracing how the isthmus rose from the sea 3 million years ago and reshaped ocean currents. Admission is $20.00 for a non-resident adult, $12.00 for a child aged 5 to 17, and free under 5. Open Tuesday-Friday 09:00-15:00, Saturday-Sunday 10:00-15:00, closed Mondays. Amador Causeway surrey carts
The Causeway itself, a paved 6-kilometer breakwater over rock excavated during canal construction, is free to walk. Four-wheel surrey pedal carts rent for $10-15 an hour and are an easy way to cover the distance to Flamenco Island with kids who tire of walking, no boat required since the road runs the whole way.
Miraflores Locks Visitor Center
Watching a container ship clear the locks from the observation terraces is one of the few attractions in Panama that reliably holds a child’s attention for an hour. Admission is $17.22 adult, $7.22 for ages 6-12, under 6 free, daily 08:00-18:00 with the ticket counter closing at 17:00. The museum includes hands-on exhibits and an IMAX documentary. Sloth Sanctuary, Gamboa
A rescue and rehabilitation center for two-toed and three-toed sloths displaced by deforestation, 40 minutes from the city. Guided educational visits run $15.00 adult, and a combined ticket with the nearby butterfly house and orchid garden runs $20-25.
Punta Culebra and the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center
Punta Culebra Nature Center, also on the Causeway, covers Pacific marine life at a small scale suited to younger kids. On Pipeline Road, the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center’s 32-meter observation tower puts older kids at canopy height for toucans and other birds; admission is $30.00, or $20.00 with a Copa Airlines stopover promotion, open 06:00-16:00.
