Panama City: Best Photo Spots
Panama City’s photography case rests on a single contrast: restored colonial streets a few kilometers from a working glass-and-steel skyline, with a functioning shipping canal running between them. These five spots cover that range.
Casco Viejo
The colonial old town is the obvious starting point, and it earns it: colorful facades, wrought-iron balconies, and church towers along Plaza Herrera and Plaza de Francia hold up in almost any light. Late afternoon works best, when the low sun catches the restored buildings’ color without the harsh midday glare, and the rooftop bars scattered through the district double as elevated vantage points once the sun starts to set.
Ancon Hill
A 30-45 minute climb gets you the one shot that sums up the whole city: skyline, canal traffic, and rainforest canopy in a single frame. Morning light is clearer here, before the afternoon humidity haze builds up over the bay, and it costs nothing to shoot.
Amador Causeway
The Causeway’s flat, waterfront stretch faces the financial district’s towers across the bay, making it the best angle on Panama City’s skyline as a whole. Frank Gehry’s Biomuseo, with its cluster of brightly angled roof panels, adds a foreground subject unlike anything else in the city. Sunset here puts the skyline in silhouette against the water, the strongest single frame the Causeway offers.
Miraflores Locks
The canal itself photographs best in motion: a ship rising or dropping between the lock gates, with the observation deck’s crowd and the machinery framing the scene. Check the day’s transit schedule before you go, since an empty lock chamber makes for a far less interesting photo than one mid-transit.
Cinta Costera and Panama Viejo
The Cinta Costera, the coastal promenade linking Casco Viejo to the modern city, gives a long, flat vantage on the skyline that’s easy to shoot on the walk between the two districts. Panama Viejo, the 1519 ruins several kilometers from Casco Viejo, offers a different subject entirely: stone foundations and the climbable cathedral tower, best photographed at opening before the tour groups arrive and fill the frame.
Timing it right
Dry season, mid-December through April, gives the clearest skies and least haze for long-distance shots like the Causeway skyline view.
