Orange Walk Day Trips: Only 1 Is Essential
Four day trips regularly get pitched from Orange Walk Town. Only one of them is worth reshuffling a short itinerary for; the other three are add-ons, not must-dos.
Lamanai comes first, no contest
The riverboat run to Lamanai’s Maya ruins is the trip Orange Walk is actually known for, and it is the one to protect on your schedule if time is tight. The number that matters most: book it locally in Orange Walk Town and it runs $50 to $75 USD, versus $140 to $200 or more for the same boat and guide booked from Belize City or the Cayes. There is no version of this trip worth paying coastal prices for.
Rio Bravo and La Milpa, if you have a spare day
About two hours’ drive west, the Rio Bravo Conservation Area and its La Milpa ruins deliver genuine wilderness rather than a curated attraction: unrestored plazas, virgin mahogany forest, and a real chance at spotting wildlife other stops here can’t match. It earns a full day of its own rather than a rushed half-day bolt-on.
Corozal and Cerros, for a specific kind of traveler
An hour north sits Corozal Town, with a short boat crossing to Cerros, the only Mayan site in Belize built right on the water’s edge. Worth doing if you’re continuing toward the Mexican border anyway; not worth a dedicated round trip if you aren’t.
Shipyard and Blue Creek, the contrast trip
A half to full day out to Mennonite country shows two versions of the same community: horse-and-buggy traditional life at Shipyard against modern farm machinery at Blue Creek near the border. Genuinely interesting, but skippable if your schedule only fits one add-on and you’d rather have Rio Bravo.
The one rule across all four
US dollars spend everywhere here at a flat 2:1 rate against the Belize dollar, so don’t waste time hunting for an exchange counter before any of these trips. Pack repellent and a hat regardless of which you pick; river glare and mosquitoes don’t care which itinerary you chose.
The verdict
