Solo in Kharkhorin Means Splitting a Jeep
Solo travelers worry about the wrong risk in Kharkhorin. Street crime here is close to nonexistent; the real obstacle to doing this place alone is the cost of a vehicle, not your safety.
What you can genuinely do by yourself
A walk around the 1.6 km perimeter of Erdene Zuu’s 108 stupas early in the morning, before any tour groups arrive, spinning the prayer wheels along the way, needs nothing but your own legs and an early alarm. Sitting in on the roughly 09:00 morning chanting at the active Laviran Temple, listening to the dungchen horns, is free and doesn’t require a group either. A guesthouse can set you up with a solo horse and wrangler for a ride along the Orkhon River without anyone else involved, and a solo walk out to the Phallic Rock or one of the granite tortoises fills an easy afternoon on its own.
Where solo actually gets expensive
The valley beyond town, Tövkhön Monastery, Orkhon Waterfall, is a different problem: those trips need a private 4WD charter running roughly 200,000 to 350,000 MNT a day, and pricing that alone as a party of one is a bad deal. Don’t price a private vehicle for yourself before asking your guesthouse who else is heading out that week. Splitting one charter three or four ways turns an expensive solo excursion into a reasonable one, and it’s the difference between skipping Orkhon Waterfall entirely and actually seeing it, so ask on arrival rather than assuming you’ll be paying the full rate alone.

Carry MNT cash; card acceptance outside the museum ticket booths is rare, and the handful of ATMs in town near the central square can run dry or lose power, so don’t count on withdrawing more once you’ve arrived, and bring enough from Ulaanbaatar to cover the whole stay.
