Naples on Foot: Spaccanapoli and Beyond
One long line through the old city
Spaccanapoli is the best walking route in Naples because it is almost perfectly straight. It cuts across the Greek-Roman grid, so you can start at one end, follow it for an hour or two and always know where you are. The walk below stitches in the main sights and the food stops.
Piazza del Gesu to San Domenico
Start at Piazza del Gesu, where the Gesu Nuovo church has a facade of diamond-cut volcanic stone. The Santa Chiara cloister next door has pillars covered in majolica tiles and a quiet garden. Cover your shoulders and knees for both. A few steps along is Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, a good place for a standing espresso at EUR1.00 to EUR1.30.
Via dei Tribunali
Parallel to Spaccanapoli, Via dei Tribunali is the pizza street. A pizza a portafoglio, folded like a wallet, is EUR2 to EUR3.50 and a fried pizza EUR3.50 to EUR5.50. The Duomo di San Gennaro is on this street and is free to enter. At Piazza San Gaetano, number 69 is the entrance to Napoli Sotterranea, whose tours in English and Italian leave every hour from 10:00 to 18:00. They last about 90 minutes and descend 136 steps into Greek-Roman cisterns, with groups under 10 not required to book. See the Napoli Sotterranea schedule .
San Gregorio Armeno
The narrow lane off Spaccanapoli is lined with workshops that make nativity figures, from traditional shepherds to caricatures and tiny watermill scenes. They sell year round, but the street is packed before Christmas, so go early in the day.
The Sansevero stop
Close to San Domenico is the Cappella Sansevero, home of the Veiled Christ. It is open 9:00 to 19:00, closed on Tuesdays, and visits are booked in advance at EUR12. Arrive early. Slots are on the Cappella Sansevero website .
Quartieri Spagnoli and Toledo
Cross Via Toledo into the Quartieri Spagnoli, a tight grid of steep alleys with laundry overhead and murals, including the large Maradona mural at Largo Maradona. Then take Metro Line 1 to Toledo station, where Robert Wilson’s blue mosaic ceiling makes the ride worth the single fare of about EUR1.20 to EUR1.30. This is a separate thing from Napoli Sotterranea, and the tickets are different.
The seafront finish
From Piazza del Plebiscito, walk toward the water along Lungomare Caracciolo to the Borgo Marinari causeway under Castel dell’Ovo. The causeway is free; check the castle interior hours on the day. As the sun sets, Vesuvius turns pink across the bay.
Practical points
- Plan most of a day for the full loop, with stops.
- Wear shoes with grip, as the old stone is polished and uneven.
- Pickpockets work in crowds and around Piazza Garibaldi, so wear bags in front.
- Do not drive in the centre; the traffic-limited zones have hours that differ by gate.
- If you want a guide, compare Naples walking tours on GetYourGuide .
Start before 9:30 and the narrow streets are yours. Use the 2-day itinerary to slot the walk around the booked sights.
