Naples Activities by Time of Day
Start at the bar counter
Naples wakes up over a standing espresso, usually EUR1.00 to EUR1.30 at the counter, often with a sfogliatella (about EUR2 to EUR3) from Pintauro or Attanasio. Sit-down prices run higher, so do what the locals do and drink it on your feet. By 9:00 the historic centre is already moving, and that is the time to be at the door of the first ticketed sight.
Morning: the sights that sell out
The Cappella Sansevero opens at 9:00 and is closed on Tuesdays. It holds Giuseppe Sanmartino’s Veiled Christ of 1753, and every visit is booked in advance. Tickets are EUR12 for adults, EUR8 for ages 18 to 26 and EUR6 for ages 10 to 17. Slots can be reserved up to 60 days ahead, and a few more are released two days before, so book early and arrive early. The Cappella Sansevero ticket page has the live calendar.
The National Archaeological Museum (MANN) is the other morning anchor. It is open 9:00 to 19:30, with last entry at 18:30, and closed on Tuesdays. Admission is EUR20, EU citizens aged 18 to 24 pay EUR2, and under-18s go free. The Alexander Mosaic from Pompeii and the Farnese Hercules are the headline pieces. Check the MANN fares page before you go.
Midday: eat, then go underground
Pizza is a midday sport here. A wallet-folded portafoglio from a Via dei Tribunali counter costs EUR2 to EUR3.50, and a sit-down Margherita at Da Michele, Sorbillo or Starita runs EUR7 to EUR14 with a beer.
Napoli Sotterranea runs guided tours in English and Italian every hour from 10:00 to 18:00, starting at Piazza San Gaetano 69. Groups under 10 do not need to book. The tour drops 40 metres down 136 steps into Greek-Roman cisterns and wartime shelters, so wear shoes with grip. Expect to pay roughly EUR12 to EUR15, and see the Napoli Sotterranea visiting hours for departures.
Afternoon: out of the city
Pompeii is 25 km from the centre, so treat it as a half or full day. Take the regular Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi towards Sorrento and get off at Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri. The ride takes about 35 minutes and costs around EUR3.30. Tickets for the site are EUR20 for the Express route, and entry is capped at 20,000 visitors a day with named tickets. Buy only from the official channels linked on the Pompeii visitor page , and ignore the touts outside the station selling vouchers.
If you prefer a guide, you can compare Pompeii tours from Naples on GetYourGuide .
Herculaneum is closer, about 20 minutes by the same train to Ercolano Scavi. It costs EUR16 and is far smaller, so it works well when time is short.
Evening: seafront and sunset
Walk Lungomare Caracciolo as the light drops and Vesuvius turns pink behind the bay. Parco Virgiliano in Posillipo is free and gives the widest view over the Gulf, Capri and Ischia. The harbour islet of Borgo Marinari beneath Castel dell’Ovo is a pleasant free stroll, but check on the day whether the castle interior is open.
Practical points
- A single Unico ticket costs about EUR1.20 to EUR1.30 and is good for 90 minutes on buses, metro, trams and funiculars.
- The Alibus airport coach costs EUR5 each way.
- Keep backpacks in front on the Circumvesuviana and around Piazza Garibaldi, where pickpockets work.
- Churches such as the Duomo and Santa Chiara expect covered shoulders and knees.
- Skip the rental car. Camera-enforced limited traffic zones cover the centre, with gate hours that differ by street and fines of roughly EUR80 to EUR335.
