Eilat is small enough to cover its marine sights in two days, which is exactly why it works as a base for something bigger: a desert loop north, a border crossing into Jordan, or a full diving certification, rather than a standalone weekend.

Israel is at US State Department Level 3, “Reconsider Travel” (reissued 26 Aug 2026). Eilat itself carries no Level 4 do-not-travel rating, unlike the narrow strip near the Egyptian border. The UK FCDO lifted its blanket warning against travel to Eilat around June 2026 while still flagging Houthi drone and missile risk; drones hit Eilat and Ramon Airport in September 2025, and the Israel-Iran ceasefire holding since April 2026 is fragile by both governments’ own account. A longer trip means more exposure to that uncertainty, so check current advisories for both Israel and Jordan before locking in a multi-day itinerary.

1. The Southern Red Sea and Negev Loop (4-5 days)

Days 1-2 stay in Eilat itself: Coral Beach, Dolphin Reef, the Underwater Observatory, and a wreck dive on the Satil for certified divers. Day 3 moves to the desert: a Red Canyon hike, sunset from Mount Zefahot, and stargazing in Timna. Days 4-5 head north through Makhtesh Ramon for crater-rim hiking, with a stop at Sde Boker, David Ben-Gurion’s desert home, before continuing toward Tel Aviv or Jerusalem.

2. The Cross-Border Holy Land and Nabataean Route (6-8 days)

Days 1-3 cover Eilat itself: the marine sites, relaxation time, and a desert jeep safari. Days 4-5 cross at the Yitzhak Rabin / Wadi Araba terminal into Jordan for a full day at Petra, with an overnight in Wadi Rum. Days 6-8 cross back into Israel and continue north to Masada, the Dead Sea, and Jerusalem. A Petra 2-day tour with an overnight stay bundles the border crossing and lodging together for exactly this leg.

3. PADI Open Water Certification (4-5 days)

Dedicated dive training at PADI 5-star centers such as Deep Siam, Manta, and Snuba, covering confined-water skills plus four open-water reef dives. Border Logistics That Actually Matter

The Yitzhak Rabin / Wadi Araba crossing into Jordan runs Sunday to Thursday 06:30-20:00 and Friday-Saturday 08:00-20:00, closed on Yom Kippur and the Muslim New Year. It briefly suspended private-vehicle crossings (pedestrians kept moving) around Eid al-Fitr in March 2026, so anyone planning to drive across should check the live notice board rather than assume year-round vehicle access. Taba, the crossing into Egypt’s Sinai, runs 24/7 with a flat 60 USD cash exit fee.

Tips

  • June through August, air temperatures hit 38-44°C in the Negev; front-load desert hiking days for morning and evening, not midday.
  • Cash covers border fees on both sides; cards handle almost everything else in Israel.
  • If your multi-day trip includes diving, book dive days early in the trip in case weather pushes a reschedule later.
