Romantic Getaways in Montreal
Romantic getaways in Montreal
Montreal suits a couple’s weekend: cobbled streets, long dinners, a spa on the water and a good view from the mountain. Prices are in Canadian dollars, and sales tax of 14.975% is added to most bills. A restaurant tip of 18 to 20% on the pre-tax total is customary. Check each venue’s own site for current rates and hours.
A spa on the river
Bota Bota is a spa moored in the Old Port at the foot of McGill Street. It is for guests aged 18 and over, and it takes bookings online or by phone. Opening hours are Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 22:00 and Friday to Sunday 9:00 to 22:00. A second boat and pavilion are being built, with work running to 30 October 2026 and the third floor closed. No water-circuit price is confirmed here, so look at the spa’s site before choosing a day.
Where to stay
Old Montreal is the usual base for couples. Hotel William Gray at 421 rue Saint-Vincent is one listed option, and the neighbourhood puts you within a few minutes’ walk of the river, the cobbled lanes and most dinner reservations. Other hotels in the area have been renovating in 2026 and their opening status has been reported inconsistently, so confirm directly before booking.
Dinner for two
- Le Club Chasse et Peche, 423 rue Saint-Claude, a Michelin-listed restaurant.
- L’Express, 3927 rue Saint-Denis, a restaurant open since 1980 with a Michelin Bib Gourmand.
- Gibbys, 230 rue Saint-Paul Ouest, a listed dinner option in Old Montreal.
- Modavie, another Old Montreal choice.
Quebec also has a BYOB custom, “apportez votre vin”, where small restaurants without a liquor licence let you bring your own bottle. Ask when you reserve.
Views and evening walks
Climb Mount Royal to the Kondiaronk Belvedere at sunset; it is free, and the Chalet du Mont-Royal sits just behind it. In the Old Port, the Grande Roue is 60 m high, with 42 heated cabins and one glass-floor VIP cabin, and a turn lasts about 20 minutes. Rue Saint-Paul and Place Jacques-Cartier are pleasant for an evening stroll. Horse-drawn carriages have been banned since 2020, so do not plan a carriage ride.
Skating at Beaver Lake
Beaver Lake on Mount Royal is a free refrigerated rink in winter, expected from about 12 December 2026 to 8 March 2027, with dates to be confirmed. Skates can be rented on site. In warm months the lake has rowboats for hire.
Winter note
January and February bring serious cold, with frostbite possible on exposed skin in under ten minutes on the coldest days. Wear layers, boots with grip and a scarf over your face, and use the RESO underground city for dry walks between hotels, shops and metro.
