Multi-Day Trip Circuits Around LA
Los Angeles County covers over 4,000 square miles, and mixing Downtown, Hollywood and the coast into a single day just buys you traffic. Grouping by neighborhood, one region per day, is what actually gets you through a multi-day trip without losing hours on the freeway.
Day 1: Downtown arts and architecture
Start at the 1939 Mission Moderne Union Station, walk to Grand Central Market for lunch among its 40-plus vendors, then ride the 298-foot Angels Flight funicular up Bunker Hill for $1 (50 cents with a TAP card). Spend the afternoon at The Broad or MOCA, both free general admission, and finish at Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, where a free 60-minute self-guided audio tour covers the atrium and rooftop garden when rehearsals allow.
Day 2: Hollywood and cinema heritage
Book a studio lot tour in the morning; Warner Bros.’ three-hour tour in Burbank bars children under 5, while Paramount’s two-hour tour requires ages 10 and up, so pick based on who is coming. In the afternoon, walk the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the TCL Chinese Theatre forecourt, then head to Griffith Observatory before sunset. Parking at the observatory’s hilltop lot is $10/hr, credit card only, so plan for that cost or take the 50-cent DASH shuttle from the Vermont/Sunset B Line station instead. Day 3: Westside and the coast
Spend the morning at the Getty Center in Brentwood, where museum admission is free but requires a timed reservation at getty.edu, and parking runs $25/car standard, dropping to $15 after 3pm and $10 after 6pm. In the afternoon, drive to Santa Monica Pier, then pedal The Strand’s flat 22-mile bike path south toward the Venice Canals for sunset. An alternative: the desert and mountain loop
For a change of scenery, drive I-10 east to Palm Springs on day one and ride the Aerial Tramway up Mount San Jacinto, then spend day two in Joshua Tree National Park, where a vehicle pass runs $30 for seven days. Summer daytime temperatures in this desert loop routinely exceed 105 to 110°F from June through September, with limited cell service inside Joshua Tree itself, so this circuit works best outside peak summer or with an early start each day.

Three tightly grouped city days, or two desert days bolted onto either end, both beat trying to cover Downtown, Hollywood, the Westside and the desert in one continuous loop.
