A sunset sail past Alcatraz

Twin Peaks at dusk, then a proper cocktail
Twin Peaks’ 922-foot summit gives a 360-degree view over downtown, the Bay Bridge and the Pacific, best timed for sunset; bring warm layers and don’t leave anything visible in a parked car, since overlook lots are a known target for break-ins (SFPD’s CompStat data tracks the pattern by neighborhood). Afterward, Top of the Mark at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins on Nob Hill or Cityscape on the 46th floor of the Hilton Union Square both look back down over the hill you just climbed.
A picnic instead of a reservation
Bi-Rite Market in the Mission and the Ferry Building Marketplace both sell the makings of a good picnic, cheese, charcuterie, Cowgirl Creamery and Acme Bread among them, to carry to the lawns at the Palace of Fine Arts or Alamo Square. Neither location charges admission, and both work at any hour daylight allows.
Dinner among the city’s top tables
San Francisco holds three Michelin three-star restaurants: Atelier Crenn in Cow Hollow, Benu in SoMa, and Quince in Jackson Square, all requiring reservations well ahead. Gary Danko in Fisherman’s Wharf held one Michelin star from 2007 until losing it in the 2024 guide (see the current list at guide.michelin.com ); it currently holds no star but keeps its fixed-price French-American menu and its following. Kokkari Estiatorio in the Financial District and Boulevard on the Embarcadero both suit a quieter, less-booked evening.
