Catalina Island by catamaran

The Pacific Surfliner runs direct from LA Union Station to Santa Barbara Station, two blocks from the beach and the Funk Zone, in 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes, with five departures a day each way. One-way unreserved coach fare runs $31 to $40 per adult, children half price, with free Wi-Fi and a cafe car onboard. It skips the weekend crawl on US-101 entirely. Palm Springs and the Aerial Tramway
Palm Springs sits 107 miles east of Downtown LA, about 2 to 2.5 hours by I-10 outside peak traffic. The Aerial Tramway’s rotating cars climb 2.5 miles from the valley floor at 2,643 feet to Mountain Station at 8,516 feet in 10 minutes, dropping the temperature by roughly 30°F. Adult tickets run $32.95, seniors $29.95, children 3 to 10 $19.95, with $15 parking. Summer valley heat routinely tops 110 to 118°F, so daytime hiking there from June through September is genuinely hazardous.
Joshua Tree National Park
About 130 miles east, 2.5 to 3 hours via I-10 and CA-62, Joshua Tree charges a $30-per-vehicle entrance fee valid for seven consecutive days, or accepts the $80 America the Beautiful annual pass. Hidden Valley’s one-mile loop, Barker Dam and Keys View’s panorama over the Coachella Valley cover the core sights in a day. Summer temperatures exceed 105°F with essentially no cell service inside the park, so carry at least a gallon of water per person.
