Izmir: Alsancak Over the Kordon Strip

Izmir is walkable enough that where you stay matters less than in most cities this size. The real choice is between three areas, and one strip people treat as a fourth, the Kordon, isn’t really a separate neighborhood at all.
Alsancak: the default base
Central, walkable to the Kordon, and dense with restaurants and nightlife, Alsancak is the practical first choice for most visitors, well connected by İZBAN and tram. If you’re only picking one area and want to walk everywhere, this is it. Compare current rates before you commit to a specific street.
Konak: the bazaar side
Home to Kemeraltı, Konak Square, the Clock Tower, and a major transit hub where the metro, tram, and a ferry pier all meet. A good base if the bazaar and sightseeing matter more to you than an evening scene, slightly quieter at night than Alsancak.
Karşıyaka: across the bay, and arguably better value
A short ferry ride from Konak or Alsancak, Karşıyaka is more local and residential, with its own waterfront promenade and tram line. The ferry commute itself is part of the appeal rather than a downside, a scenic few minutes across the gulf twice a day, and rooms here tend to run cheaper than an equivalent Alsancak stay.
The Kordon: a strip, not a district
The seafront promenade running through and beside both Alsancak and Konak isn’t a standalone neighborhood, it’s where a cluster of larger hotels and the best sea views happen to sit. Think of it as a positioning detail within Alsancak or Konak rather than a fourth area to choose between.
Named hotels worth knowing
Swissôtel Büyük Efes İzmir (also referenced as Swissôtel Grand Efes) is a longstanding upscale landmark near the city center with spa and pool facilities. Mövenpick Hotel İzmir sits on the Kordon itself, family-friendly and waterfront. Key Hotel is a further named option worth checking (verify current status and pricing on all three before booking). Beyond these, look by area rather than a specific unverified mid-range name, boutique options around Alsancak’s side streets are a safe general bet.

One concrete move: pick Alsancak if this is your only Izmir stay, and Karşıyaka if you’re staying three nights or more and don’t mind the short ferry ride for the better rate.
