Frankfurt Multi-Day Trips: The Rhine Circuit
Frankfurt Multi-Day Trips: The Rhine Circuit
Three nights is enough to turn Frankfurt into the first stop on a Rhine and Moselle circuit: a city night, a wine-village night and a castle-and-confluence night. The plan below is built on trains and viewpoints, because Rhine boats depend on the water level.
Day one: Frankfurt
Spend the first day in town. Visit the Städel Museum at Schaumainkai 63, which is closed on Mondays and charges about €17 to €19 for adults. Walk the Neue Altstadt between the Römer and the Kaiserdom, a 2012 to 2018 reconstruction of the timber-framed lanes the 1944 bombing destroyed. End with Apfelwein in Alt-Sachsenhausen. Sleep near the Hauptbahnhof for an early train.
Day two: Rüdesheim and the river
The RB10 runs hourly from Frankfurt to Rüdesheim am Rhein in 1 hour 10 minutes, and it is covered by the Deutschlandticket. In Rüdesheim, walk Drosselgasse, then ride the cable car above the Riesling terraces to the Niederwalddenkmal monument, built in 1883. A return costs €12 for adults. The cable car runs from 21 March to 1 November 2026, closes from 2 to 18 November, and reopens from 19 November to 23 December for the Christmas market.
Rhine cruises can be suspended when the river runs low, as in autumn 2026, so check KD or Bingen-Rüdesheimer before you travel. If sailings are running, a boat past Burg Rheinstein and Burg Reichenstein toward the Loreley is the highlight of the circuit. If they are not, take the train along the river instead and keep the castles for the viewpoints. Sleep in Rüdesheim or at Bacharach or St. Goar. Cable car prices and dates are on seilbahn-ruedesheim.de .
Day three: Burg Eltz and Koblenz
Burg Eltz sits in a forest valley near Moselkern and is open daily from 09:30 to 17:00, between 29 March and 1 November 2026. Adults pay €14. Reach it by train to Hatzenport and the RegioBus 365, or walk about 5 km from Moselkern station. Check burg-eltz.de for hours. Afterwards, go on to Koblenz, where the Rhine and the Moselle meet at the Deutsches Eck. A room in Koblenz makes the return to Frankfurt simple, and you can check Koblenz hotels on Booking.com .
Day four: back via the Rhine
Use the fourth day as a loose finish: a morning in Koblenz, then a train back to the Hauptbahnhof. Check times on bahn.de .
Practical points
The Deutschlandticket (€63 a month) covers regional trains but not ICE or IC services, so look at regional connections first. Keep valuables close in the Hauptbahnhof. The day trips page covers Heidelberg, Mainz and Wiesbaden if you prefer to stay based in Frankfurt.
Tip: if you visit after 1 November, drop the cable car and Burg Eltz and spend the extra time in Koblenz and the vineyards on foot.
