Family Activities in Ecuador
Travel advisory, October 2026: Ecuador is under a state of exception in eight provinces, including Pichincha (Quito), declared for 60 days from 15 September 2026, and curfews have been imposed several times this year, so check the current decree. The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the coastal provinces (Esmeraldas, Manabí, Santa Elena, Guayas, El Oro, Los Ríos and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, with airside transit at Guayaquil airport excepted) and to the 20 km strip along the Colombian border, which includes Lago Agrio. The US State Department rates Ecuador Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, with higher levels for named areas. Quito’s old town, the Andean highlands and the Galápagos lie outside the FCDO areas, but street crime, express kidnapping and taxi scams are real, so use registered taxis, stay on busy streets by day and keep valuables out of sight. Heavy rain and landslides are forecast for the 2026-27 El Niño. Read the current UK FCDO advice and US State Department advisory before you book and again before you fly. This page is written for the areas outside the warnings.
Families can build a good Ecuador trip from short, low-effort stops in the highlands, with the Galápagos as a bigger project. The main constraints are altitude, rain and road safety rather than a shortage of things to see. Prices below are official where an official source exists and approximate otherwise.
Altitude with children
Quito is at about 2,850 m, Cuenca at about 2,560 m and the Quilotoa rim at about 3,900 m. Spend the first days at an easy pace, give children plenty of water and avoid strenuous hikes on arrival. If a headache, vomiting, confusion or breathlessness at rest develops, descend and seek help. Pack warm layers, because wind at the top of the cable car and around the volcanoes is cold even on sunny days.
TelefériQo
Children can ride from 18 months. The single (non-resident) fare is US$9.00 for adults and US$7.00 for under-18s, and over-65s and visitors with a disability pay US$6.50. The ride takes about 18 minutes from 3,117 m to Cruz Loma at about 3,950 m. The cable car runs every day, but weather can stop it, so allow slack in the day. Fares and hours are on the TelefériQo site .
Ciudad Mitad del Mundo
Child and senior entry is US$2.50, against US$5.00 for adults. The complex has a 30 m monument, a planetarium and several museums, and it opens 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 18:00 at weekends. Children enjoy the planetarium and the open plazas.
Laguna de Limpiopungo
This flat loop in Cotopaxi National Park takes about an hour at roughly 3,800 m, making it the most child-friendly way to see the volcano. Entry is reported to be free, but you register at the ranger gate and carry passports for everyone. Ask a tour operator or taxi driver to take you, because no public bus enters the park. Check IG-EPN and the park before you go.
Mindo
The cloud forest on the western slope suits a family day from Quito, about 2 hours away. A butterfly farm costs about US$8 and a chocolate tour about US$10. Zip-lines and canopy walks have caused deaths in Ecuador, according to the FCDO, so choose licensed operators only and check harnesses.
Galápagos with children
Foreign children under 12 pay a US$100 park fee and under-2s are exempt, while foreign visitors over 12 pay US$200. Everyone also needs the US$20 Transit Control Card from the CGREG counter at the Quito or Guayaquil airport. The Charles Darwin Research Station exhibition hall in Puerto Ayora is free every day from 08:00 to 18:00 and explains the tortoise breeding programme. Most sites need an authorised naturalist guide, animals must be kept 2 m away and mandatory travel health insurance applies. Isabela has only a very basic health centre, so check medical cover before booking.
Where to keep children away
The Pacific coast and Lago Agrio sit inside advisory areas, so skip them on a family trip. Beaches there often have no warning flags and strong currents.
