Day Trips From Rio de Janeiro
Not every excursion billed as a Rio day trip actually fits in one day. Petrópolis, Niterói and Paquetá do. Paraty, Búzios and Ilha Grande do not, no matter how the coach company’s brochure frames it.
Petrópolis, the Imperial City
The old summer capital sits 68km north in the Serra dos Órgãos, 1.5 to 2 hours each way by road. There is no passenger rail to Petrópolis; the historic line stopped carrying travelers decades ago. Viação Única/Fácil runs direct buses from Rodoviária Novo Rio every 30-45 minutes from 05:30 to 22:00, for around R$38-48 one way, or drive the BR-040 toll road. Once there, the Museu Imperial, Dom Pedro II’s summer palace, is open Tuesday to Sunday 09:30-18:00 for R$16 adult, R$8 concession; visitors wear felt slippers over the original 19th-century parquet. The Palácio de Cristal, a prefabricated French glasshouse assembled in 1884, is free to enter, and Cervejaria Bohemia, Brazil’s oldest brewery, runs interactive tours for R$45-60.
Niterói, across the bay
CCR Barcas ferries leave Praça XV for Praça Araribóia in Niterói every 15-20 minutes on weekdays, 20 minutes each way, for a flat R$7.70 fare paid at the turnstile with Jaé, Riocard Mais or a tap-to-pay card. On the far side, Oscar Niemeyer’s saucer-shaped MAC Niterói museum, Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-18:00, charges R$16 adult and R$8 concession, free on Wednesdays and free daily for anyone arriving by bicycle. A local bus or a short Uber covers the 10 minutes from the ferry terminal.
Ilha de Paquetá, car-free
CCR Barcas also crosses from Praça XV directly to Paquetá, 50 to 70 minutes depending on the vessel, R$7.70 one way. No cars are allowed on the island; rental bicycles run R$15-20 an hour and electric eco-taxis cover longer distances. Parque Darke de Mattos and Praia da Moreninha are the main stops for a half or full day among baobabs and colonial cottages.
What is not a day trip
Ilha Grande needs 2.5-3 hours of driving to Conceição de Jacareí or Angra dos Reis before a 30-90 minute boat crossing. Operators do run 14-hour coach-and-schooner day tours, bookable on Viator , for roughly R$250-350, but that is most of a day spent in transit for a few hours on the island; treat Ilha Grande as 2-3 nights instead. Paraty is 250km southwest, 4.5-5 hours each way by the Viação Costa Verde bus, which makes any day trip 8-10 hours of transit for a few hours in town. Búzios is 175km east and 3.5-4.5 hours by bus on Viação 1001, mostly because of the Rio-Niterói bridge bottleneck; give it 2 nights minimum. The verdict
Petrópolis by bus and Niterói by ferry both work as a genuine single day out; visit.rio’s own trip-planning pages list current transit and museum hours for both; day tours to Petrópolis are bookable on GetYourGuide for anyone who would rather not manage the bus schedule themselves. Save Paraty, Búzios and Ilha Grande for a trip with at least one night on the ground.
