Brasília: Cerrado Hikes and Waterfalls

Brasília itself isn’t a hiking destination, the Plano Piloto is flat and built for cars, not trails. Real hiking here means driving out to one of three places: a national park inside the urban footprint, a botanical garden trail, or a UNESCO-listed plateau that needs an overnight, not a checklist stop.

Is there real hiking inside Brasília?
Not much, but one genuine exception exists. Brasília National Park, known locally as Água Mineral, covers 423.83 km², making it the largest park inside an urbanized area anywhere in the world, created in 1961 and run by ICMBio . It offers spring-fed pools alongside cerrado trekking trails without leaving the city. Current hours, fees, and any trail restrictions weren’t independently confirmed this round, verify before you build a full day around it. Compare rental cars for Brasília if you’re combining this with the Jardim Botânico or a Chapada overnight below, rideshare gets expensive once you’re stacking multiple stops in one day.
Jardim Botânico’s 4.5km cerrado trail
The Jardim Botânico de Brasília covers 526 hectares of cerrado-based planting, including a dedicated orchid space, with a 4.5km trail running through it, open Tuesday-Sunday, 9am-5pm (verify current fee and exact distance from the city center). It’s a shorter, gentler option than Água Mineral if you want a cerrado nature fix without a half-day commitment.
The real hike is outside the city: Chapada dos Veadeiros
If you want actual multi-hour trekking, Água Mineral won’t deliver it, Chapada dos Veadeiros will. It’s about 230km and 3 hours by car to the base town of São Jorge, on a 1.8-billion-year-old plateau where a local guide is mandatory on both of the park’s marked routes, one of which reaches the 120m Rio Preto Falls. Treat this as an overnight, not a day hike, the drive alone rules out a same-day round trip; the day trips guide covers the logistics in full. Best window is June-July. Book a Chapada dos Veadeiros hiking tour rather than trying to arrange the mandatory guide once you’ve already arrived.

One concrete move: if you’ve only got a morning to spare, take Água Mineral over the Jardim Botânico, it’s the only spot on this list that pairs cerrado trekking with a swim.
