Cusco 7 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Seven days is the fullest version of this trip: acclimatization, the whole Sacred Valley (not just Pisac and Ollantaytambo), Machu Picchu, the quiet South Valley, and a high-altitude finish. Less time, drop to the 6 or 5-day plans. Book these before you go
- Machu Picchu entry: weeks ahead in shoulder season, 3+ months for June-August or Huayna Picchu; non-refundable.
- The Ollantaytambo-Aguas Calientes train (PeruRail or IncaRail).
- Inca Trail permits, if you’re swapping in a trek, release each October and sell out fast; the trail is closed every February regardless.
- The Boleto Turístico for day 2: COSITUC only, cash in soles, not sold online.
Day 1: Acclimatization, not ambition
At 3,400m, day one stays slow. Plaza de Armas is free; the Cathedral ($12/S 40) holds the Cusco School’s Last Supper painting with cuy, guinea pig, on the table. Walk to Qorikancha ($4/S 15), then spend the afternoon in San Blas: steep streets, small workshops, and the carved single-cedar pulpit inside the San Blas church.
Day 2: The ruins above town and San Pedro Market
Sacsayhuamán has no standalone ticket, it’s Boleto Turístico only (Partial, ~$19/S 70), and covers Q’enqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay on the same circuit, plus the free Cristo Blanco viewpoint. Lunch at San Pedro Market, food stalls run best 8-11am.
Day 3: Sacred Valley, Pisac and Ollantaytambo
Pisac’s Inca terraces sit above a market town; Ollantaytambo is the valley’s standout, a still-functioning Inca town plan below a massive terraced fortress, and the station you’ll leave from before Machu Picchu. Sleep in the valley tonight if you can.
Day 4: Machu Picchu
The pre-booked train from Ollantaytambo runs about 1h45 to Aguas Calientes, then the licensed shuttle bus up to the gate, don’t rely on an old source naming a specific operator, that route has changed hands recently. Entry is a timed slot on a numbered circuit with a short grace window. Treat the visit as one continuous block; re-entry after leaving isn’t permitted.
Day 5: The South Valley, quiet and uncrowded
Tipón’s Inca water-engineering terraces still carry working aqueducts; Pikillacta is pre-Inca, built by the Wari rather than the Inca; Andahuaylillas’ gilded interior has earned it the nickname the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas.” A fraction of the crowds of anything you’ve seen so far.
Day 6: More Sacred Valley, Chinchero, Moray, and Maras
The rest of the valley you didn’t cover on day 3. Chinchero pairs a colonial church built over an Inca site with a strong weaving cooperative tradition; Moray’s concentric agricultural terraces cut into a natural depression are one of the valley’s more photogenic stops; the Maras salt pans nearby, still worked much as they have been for centuries, aren’t on the Boleto Turístico, so budget a separate small entrance fee.
Day 7: Palccoyo
Palccoyo (~4,900m) is the quieter alternative to Rainbow Mountain: a shorter, easier walk to a similar striped-mineral landscape with far fewer people on the trail, and a reasonable acclimatization ask by day 7. Go with a tour that includes breakfast and a paced ascent. If you’d rather do the more famous version instead, Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca, ~5,036m) is the swap, just not both in the same trip.

Build a buffer day around Machu Picchu specifically if a tight flight follows this trip: strikes and demonstrations have shut rail and site access with little notice more than once in recent years, and a paid ticket doesn’t guarantee the day runs as planned.
