Copenhagen Day Trips by Train
Every good Copenhagen day trip is a train ride under 50 minutes, and the regional rail network makes five of them genuinely worth the fare. Bornholm sits outside that window, a long ferry crossing away, and suits an overnight stay rather than a single day.
Roskilde: Viking ships and a burial church
DSB regional trains run København H to Roskilde in 20-25 minutes, every 10-15 minutes, for about 84 DKK round trip or free on the Copenhagen Card. The Viking Ship Museum, a 15-minute walk downhill from the station, holds five authentic 11th-century Skuldelev ships excavated from the fjord in 1962; you cannot board the originals, but shipwrights build sailable replicas in the adjoining harbor that visitors can climb into, and 50-minute fjord sailings run May through September for an extra 120 DKK. Ten minutes further on foot, Roskilde Cathedral , a UNESCO World Heritage Gothic brick church, holds the tombs of 40 Danish monarchs; it is their burial church, not their coronation site, and tickets are 80 DKK. Helsingør: Kronborg Castle
Kystbanen trains from København H or Nørreport reach Helsingør in 45-48 minutes, running every 20 minutes. Kronborg, the UNESCO-listed fortress that inspired Shakespeare’s Hamlet, has a 62m ballroom, royal tapestries and dark casemates worth a phone flashlight; tickets run 135 DKK online, 150 DKK at the door. Hillerød: Frederiksborg Castle
S-tog Line A reaches Hillerød in 38-40 minutes. Frederiksborg is Scandinavia’s largest Renaissance palace, built by Christian IV across three islets on a castle lake, rebuilt after an 1859 fire on Carlsberg money. Admission is 125 DKK; the formal Baroque water gardens are free to walk.
Humlebæk: Louisiana
Kystbanen trains reach Humlebæk in 35 minutes. Louisiana pairs glass-walled modernist galleries with a sculpture park overlooking the Øresund toward Sweden, Giacometti and Yayoi Kusama among the highlights. Tickets are 145 DKK, and the museum stays open until 22:00 Tuesday to Friday, useful if you want an evening light on the water.
Malmö, Sweden: a currency change, not a country change in effort
Öresundståg trains cross the bridge to Malmö Central in 35-38 minutes, every 15-20 minutes. Carry a passport or Schengen ID; Swedish police run random checks at Hyllie. Malmö runs on Swedish kronor, not Danish, and the two currencies trade at different rates despite the shared “kr” symbol. Lilla Torg, the Turning Torso, and the 1898 Ribersborgs Kallbadhus sea baths fill an afternoon before the train back.
Why Bornholm is not on this list
Bornholm is an ordinary Danish municipality in Region Hovedstaden, not an autonomous territory, and there is no 2-hour ferry from Copenhagen. The real routes run from Ystad in Sweden or from Køge, and the Køge crossing alone takes about 5.5 hours. Treat it as an overnight, not a day trip.
The verdict
