Odense is made for walking. The old town is small, flat and mostly pedestrianised, and its best-known theme, the life of Hans Christian Andersen, ties naturally into a route on foot. A typical Andersen walk covers about 2 to 3 miles over partly cobbled streets. Any prices are in Danish kroner (DKK), not euro.

In the footsteps of Hans Christian Andersen

The signature walk is “In the Footsteps of Hans Christian Andersen.” It threads past his birthplace, the spot where his mother worked as a laundress, the cathedral (Skt. Knuds Kirke) where he was confirmed, and the site of the old theatre. Along the way you pass the underground H.C. Andersens Hus and the small yellow Childhood Home on Munkemollestraede. It is an easy, story-led loop through the historic centre.

Self-guided or guided

What you walk past

Beyond the Andersen sites, an old-town circuit takes in the cobbled Latin Quarter, the pedestrian shopping core, Brandts art museum in its converted textile factory, and the TID city museum among old courtyards. Drop down to the Odense River and Munke Mose for a green stretch, or the Eventyrhaven (Fairytale Garden) beside the museum.

Practical tips

Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbles and bring a light waterproof, as the weather shifts quickly. Spring and early autumn give the most comfortable walking conditions. The old town is walkable from the train station in a few minutes, so no transport is needed to start. If you would rather not walk the whole way, the river cruise from Munke Mose covers the green southern edge by boat instead.
