Memphis: Do You Need a Day Trip?
Most Memphis guides assume you’ll want to leave the city. Honest verdict: you probably don’t need to, the music-and-history core here is genuinely 3-4 days on its own, Beale Street, the Civil Rights Museum, Graceland, Sun Studio, Stax, and Midtown all fit inside that window without padding.
The one that isn’t really a day trip
Big River Crossing is free, about a one-mile walk, and it’s inside your existing city day, no car and no extra day required. Walk it from downtown at sunset and you’ve technically added a second state (Arkansas) to your trip without ever leaving your itinerary. This is the easiest “day trip” there is, because it barely counts as one.
The one legitimate close option: Tunica
If you do have a genuine extra day and want to leave the city, Tunica, Mississippi, about 30-45 minutes south, is the closest real option: a casino corridor plus the Gateway to the Blues Museum. It’s a lighter, half-day-to-full-day trip that doesn’t demand giving up much of your Memphis time, a reasonable add-on to a 5-day-or-longer visit rather than a must-do.
Why this page doesn’t cover Clarksdale, Oxford, or Shiloh
Further into Mississippi, Clarksdale (the real Delta blues pilgrimage, the Crossroads of Highways 61 and 49), Oxford (Ole Miss and Faulkner’s Rowan Oak), and the Shiloh Civil War battlefield are all real, worthwhile trips, roughly 75 minutes to 2-plus hours south and east. But they deserve more than a rushed day squeezed out of a city visit, and if the Mississippi Delta and the wider Mid-South corridor are actually the point of your trip rather than an afterthought to Memphis itself, that’s a different kind of visit built around exactly those trips as the main event, not a side note to the city.
The honest recommendation
If this is your first Memphis trip, spend your days in the city. The 4-day itinerary covers the full core circuit without needing a single day trip to feel complete. Only reach for Tunica, or a longer Delta-focused visit, once you’ve already done Memphis itself and specifically want more.
For the full city rundown, see the Memphis guide ; the 5-day itinerary is the one that actually works a single day trip in, on day five, once the city is done.
