Baku Multi-Day Trips: Sheki, Quba, Gabala
Travel advice. The UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Azerbaijan’s border with Armenia and against all but essential travel to the south-western districts affected by the 2020 and 2023 conflicts, where mines and unexploded ordnance remain. The US State Department rates Azerbaijan Level 3, Reconsider Travel. The routes below run north and west from Baku and avoid those areas. Land and sea entry is restricted, so plan to fly into Baku. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before booking anything.
Baku is the natural base for trips of two to four nights. Distances are long, mountain roads are slow and buses are the main public transport, so a realistic plan has few stops and early starts. Costs are in manat (AZN), about 1.70 to the US dollar.
Baku as a base for three or four days
Many visitors never leave the capital area and still fill a long weekend. Spend a day on the Old City and the Seaside Boulevard, another on the Absheron circuit of Ateshgah, Yanar Dag and Gala, and a third on Gobustan and its mud volcanoes. A fourth day suits museums or the hammams. The four-day Baku itinerary lays out a longer plan.
Sheki, two nights
Sheki lies about 283 km from Baku, and the bus takes 6 to 6.5 hours each way, with fares around 6 to 9 AZN (check before you go). That journey means a night in Sheki at the very least, and two nights gives a day to walk without a bus on either side. The Khan’s Palace charges a foreign adult 15 AZN from 1 January 2026.
Quba and Khinalug, two nights
Quba is about 170 km from Baku and takes 2.5 to 4 hours to reach. Khinalug is a mountain village 50 to 60 km above Quba on a winding road that needs a taxi or a 4x4. Road quality reports conflict, so ask your guesthouse in Quba about conditions on the day. A night in each place spreads the driving.
Gabala and the mountains
Gabala is about 220 km away, a drive of 3.5 to 4 hours. There is no direct train from Baku, so most visitors go by road. The Tufandag resort is the best-known mountain base in the area.
Shahdag
Shahdag, in the Qusar district, is about 210 km from Baku and around 3 hours by car. The resort lists 37 slopes, 45 km of pistes and 20 lifts, and a day pass for an adult costs 45 AZN on the official price. Bear in mind that this is a long day from Baku, so staying at the resort is easier.
Planning rules
- Arrive by air. Ordinary visitors should not plan road or rail legs to Georgia, Russia, Iran or Armenia, because land entry is restricted.
- Karabakh is not a destination for visitors; it needs a permit, mines remain, and the FCDO advises against all but essential travel there.
- Cards work in Baku, but carry AZN cash for buses, guesthouses and village shops.
