Baku Attraction Tours: Fire Sites, Gobustan
Travel advice. The UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Azerbaijan’s border with Armenia and against all but essential travel to south-western districts that still contain mines and unexploded ordnance. The US lists Azerbaijan at Level 3, Reconsider Travel. Every attraction on this page is in or near Baku and outside those districts. Entry for most visitors is by air, and tour operators should not be taking anyone toward the border areas. See gov.uk and travel.state.gov for the latest wording.
Guided attraction tours from Baku mostly follow four routes: the fire sites of the Absheron Peninsula, Gobustan with its mud volcanoes, the Old City, and the big modern buildings along the bay. Costs are in manat (AZN), about 1.70 to the US dollar. Operators change often, so judge any tour by what it includes rather than by its name.
The Absheron circuit
This is the classic half-day. The Ateshgah fire temple at Surakhani, Yanar Dag at Mammadli village and the Gala reserve each charge 15 AZN for a foreign adult. Yanar Dag and the Ateshgah together are sold as a 25 AZN combo, and a 35 AZN version adds the Mud Volcanoes Tourism Complex. Combos are per person and last 72 hours from the first entry, and groups of 10 or more get a discount. Yanar Dag lies about 5 km off the Zabrat roundabout, and the drive from the centre is 30 to 45 minutes.
Yanar Dag also runs its own guided tour of about two hours: 3 AZN in Azerbaijani and 10 AZN in other languages. Foreign children under 12 enter free, and the Yanar Dag visitor page lists the rules.
Gobustan and mud volcano tours
Operator quotes for a half day start at about 65 AZN per person, and entry tickets are sometimes left out of the price. Gobustan is about 60 km south-west of Baku and roughly an hour away. The mud volcanoes beyond the main site are cold, not hot, and the track needs a 4x4, which is why most visitors book a driver. Stay on the paths: crusted pits, slick clay after rain and sudden gas release are the real hazards. The rock carvings are protected, so no climbing or touching.
Old City guided visits
Official tickets are 19 AZN for the Maiden Tower and 24 AZN for the Shirvanshahs’ Palace Complex. Reseller timed-entry products usually cost more than the gate price, so work out what the extra buys, whether a guide, a transfer or a skip-the-queue slot. The Tourist Information Center on Boyuk Qala Street is the official starting point, and the Icherisheher site shows the tariff.
Modern landmarks and the bay
The Heydar Aliyev Center is a Zaha Hadid building opened in 2012, and the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, shaped like a rolled carpet, stands on the Boulevard. Both charge for museum entry, and published prices conflict, so check the centre’s own site before you pay a tour premium. Boat cruises have also run from the Boulevard, with sunset and private options listed on reseller sites.
Booking tips
Ask whether tickets, lunch and the 4x4 leg are included. Prefer a driver or guide who gives you a written price, and agree any taxi fare before leaving. To compare options, browse Baku tours on GetYourGuide or Gobustan and mud volcano tours on Viator .
