Amsterdam's Randstad Circuit and Texel
Every overnight added to a Netherlands trip adds a genuine cost that rarely shows up in the headline room rate, and it is worth knowing before booking three or four nights across this circuit rather than after checkout.
Budget for the tax stack before booking any of this
Amsterdam’s 12.5 percent city tourist tax, unchanged, now stacks with a national VAT on hotel accommodation that rose from 9 percent to 21 percent on 1 January 2026, together adding roughly a third on top of a quoted room rate. That number matters more here than on a single-city trip, since this circuit means paying it three or four separate times across different overnights rather than once. Search hotels for a Randstad circuit stay with that stacked total in mind rather than the headline nightly rate alone.
The Randstad-plus-windmills circuit, spread across nights
Zaanse Schans, Haarlem, Utrecht, Rotterdam and Kinderdijk, plus Marken, Volendam and, in season, Keukenhof, is exhausting to compress into single day trips from one base. A realistic version keeps 2-3 nights in Amsterdam for the closer stops and adds one overnight in Rotterdam specifically to cover Kinderdijk without a same-day round trip, a genuinely better pace than trying to squeeze the whole list into day trips.
Giethoorn: worth an overnight, given the transfer time
NS to Zwolle or Steenwijk plus an infrequent bus line 70 puts Giethoorn 2-2.5 hours each way, roughly EUR 58 return per person. An overnight in the village itself turns a punishing day into a relaxed one; check the return bus schedule carefully before committing to a single-day version at all, since missing the last bus back is a real risk here.
Texel: beaches and dunes, not windmills
NS Centraal to Den Helder runs about 75 minutes, then a bus or Texelhopper transfer to the ferry terminal and the roughly 20-minute TESO ferry crossing; there is no direct ferry from Amsterdam itself. Wide beaches, dunes, the Ecomare nature and seal centre, and bike routes make Texel a genuinely different register from the windmill-and-canal circuit, a beach-and-nature option most Amsterdam-only itineraries never mention. It works as a day trip on paper but rewards an overnight given the transfer time on both ends.
