City centre, the easiest first-time base
Around Rotterdam Centraal, Coolsingel and the Lijnbaan is the most convenient base for first-timers, walkable to the Markthal and the Cube Houses, with the metro and tram network radiating out from Centraal station right there.
Kop van Zuid / Wilhelminapier, for the skyline and two genuinely iconic hotels
Kop van Zuid, the redeveloped former harbour district across the Erasmusbrug, is now Rotterdam’s dramatic modern skyline, De Rotterdam, the KPN Tower, and it’s home to the city’s two most distinctive named stays: Hotel New York, in the former Holland America Line head office, and the SS Rotterdam, the former ocean liner permanently moored as a hotel-and-museum ship since 2010. A short tram or water-taxi hop from the centre, good for river views and a design-forward stay.
Oude Haven / Blaak, right by the Cube Houses
The old-harbour area around Blaak station sits directly by the Cube Houses, central and characterful, walkable to everything in the historic-modern core without needing transit for most of a day’s sightseeing.
Delfshaven, for Rotterdam’s one pre-war pocket
Delfshaven escaped the 1940 Blitz, so it’s the quietest, most characterful old-harbour base on this list, a short metro ride from the centre and closest to the Pilgrim Fathers story if that’s on your list.
Kralingen, for a quieter, leafier stay
Kralingen is a leafy, more residential area near the Kralingse Plas lake, a quieter option than the centre while still well connected by tram and metro.
Do not expect a long list of named boutique hotels beyond Hotel New York and the SS Rotterdam, both genuinely iconic and well documented; recommend the other areas by zone and character instead. Check current Rotterdam hotel rates before booking, particularly around North Sea Jazz in July when the closest rooms fill first.
