Renting your own boat or your own bike sounds like the same idea, self-directed movement through the canals versus the streets, but the two come with very different rules and a very different risk profile.
Self-drive boats: no license, no guide, no fixed route
Several operators rent small electric sloops for a few hours, with no boating license required in Dutch waters for boats under a set size and speed. It is a genuinely different, do-it-yourself register from a guided canal cruise: you pick the route, you pick the pace, and nobody narrates the bridges for you. This segment is fragmented and price-competitive enough that comparing two or three current listings before booking is worth the extra few minutes. Bike rental, and the real number behind the safety warning
MacBike runs five rental points, Centraal, Waterlooplein, Leidseplein, Vondelpark and Dam Square, from EUR 13.95 for three hours up to EUR 17.95 for a full day. Yellow Bike runs from EUR 8 an hour, EUR 13-17.50 for three hours or a full day on a standard bike, and EUR 19.99-29.99 for an e-bike. Before renting either, know that just over half of Amsterdam’s roughly 5,000 annual traffic-accident casualties are cyclists, and that 18-24-year-olds are the single most at-risk age group; the bike lane here is a real traffic lane, not a wide sidewalk, and it is shared with delivery scooters, trams and other cyclists moving fast. Book a bike rental to reserve ahead for a weekend, when the busiest rental points do run out of stock.
Getting between the water and the streets

Combine a self-drive boat morning with a bike-rental afternoon rather than trying to do both from the water, since docking a rented boat mid-route to switch to a bike is rarely straightforward.
What this category leaves out on purpose
Amsterdam proper has no adventure sports, no wildlife safari and no beach or surf scene, so keep expectations to tastings, classes, self-drive boats and bike rental rather than something this compact, flat city was never built to offer.
