Rotterdam’s real event calendar is smaller and better-documented than most “top festivals” lists suggest. Here’s what’s genuinely worth timing a trip around, with real months and venues, not padded filler.

North Sea Jazz Festival, the biggest indoor jazz festival in the world
Founded in 1976 by Paul Acket, North Sea Jazz moved to Ahoy Rotterdam in 2006 after its original Hague venue was demolished, and now runs fifteen stages with around 1,200 musicians and roughly 25,000 visitors a day, billed as the biggest indoor jazz festival anywhere. It’s held on the second weekend of July, officially “NN North Sea Jazz Festival” since 2017.
International Film Festival Rotterdam, one of Europe’s major film events
Founded in 1972 by Huub Bals, IFFR runs annually in late January and focuses on independent, experimental and arthouse film, with industry sidebars CineMart and BoostNL connecting filmmakers to funding. After 50-plus editions it’s one of Europe’s significant film festivals, and January is otherwise Rotterdam’s quietest, cheapest month to visit.
Rotterdam Marathon, run since 1981
The flat, fast Rotterdam Marathon course produced two men’s marathon world bests, Carlos Lopes in 1985 and Belayneh Dinsamo in 1988, a record that stood until 1998. It’s been an IAAF/World Athletics Gold Label race since 2012, branded the “NN Rotterdam Marathon,” and drew 16,837 finishers in 2023, the most popular marathon in the Netherlands.
King’s Day, the same orange-clad tradition as the rest of the country
King’s Day (Koningsdag) falls on 27 April nationwide, celebrated with the same street-party and market conventions as Amsterdam and every other Dutch city, just with a Rotterdam-scale crowd rather than the capital’s.
Zomercarnaval and Wereldhavendagen, the two to know about locally
Zomercarnaval, a large Caribbean and Antillean-style street parade, runs in July and reflects the same multicultural population that shapes the city’s food scene. Wereldhavendagen (World Port Days), an early-September festival celebrating the port with ship displays and demonstrations, is the one to catch if the harbour itself is the draw.
