A 4-Day Copenhagen Trip, Paced Right
Four days in Copenhagen works best as a spiral outward from Indre By: center, then harbor edges, then North Zealand, then a choice of Viking heritage or a Swedish afternoon. Sequenced this way you never backtrack across the city for a sight you skipped.
Day 1: the royal spine
Start at Rådhuspladsen and walk the Strøget pedestrian spine to Kongens Nytorv. Climb Rundetårn’s spiral ramp for 60 DKK and a 360-degree view, then tour Rosenborg Castle’s Treasury for 150 DKK to see the Crown Jewels. Walk Nyhavn’s quays to Amalienborg for the 12:00 changing of the guard, then dinner at Torvehallerne’s food halls before an evening at Tivoli, illuminated after dark. Day 2: harbor and Vesterbro

Day 3: North Zealand castle loop
S-tog Line A reaches Hillerød in 38 minutes for Frederiksborg Castle, Scandinavia’s grandest Renaissance palace, and its Baroque cascade gardens, 125 DKK. Continue by local train to Helsingør for Kronborg Castle , 135 DKK online, and the subterranean M/S Maritime Museum. Day 4: Roskilde or Malmö
Either take the 25-minute train to Roskilde for the Viking Ship Museum’s five authentic Skuldelev vessels, 160 DKK, followed by Roskilde Cathedral’s 40 royal tombs, 80 DKK; or cross the Øresund Bridge by Öresundståg train, 35 minutes, to Malmö, Sweden, where Lilla Torg and the Turning Torso fill an afternoon and everything is priced in Swedish kronor rather than Danish.
Where to stay
Indre By puts everything on Day 1 and 2 within walking distance. Vesterbro sits closer to Central Station and the Kødbyen dining scene. Christianshavn is quieter at night and closest to the canal activities on Day 2.
