Slovakia 6 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Six days is enough to do the full cross-country version of Slovakia properly: Bratislava in the far west, a central-Slovakia castle stop, the High Tatras for hiking, and Spiš Castle and Košice on the eastern end, roughly 4 to 5 hours from where you started. It is a road-trip itinerary in the truest sense, plan on a rental car or a mix of trains and the narrow-gauge TEŽ railway rather than trying to base yourself in one place the whole time. One thing to get straight before you land: this is Slovakia, not Slovenia, and it split from the Czech Republic on 1 January 1993, so do not expect Prague sights to show up here.

Slovakia uses the euro and sits inside the EU, Schengen and eurozone. ETIAS is planned but not yet required as of 2026, while the EU’s Entry/Exit System is already live and adds a short biometric check for non-EU arrivals. A motorway e-vignette is mandatory if you are driving, buy it online at eznamka.sk before your first motorway stretch, automatic cameras enforce it.

Book these before you go:

Day 1: Bratislava

Bratislava Castle sits above the Danube, the courtyard and terrace are free and give a clean view over the river into Austria; St Martin’s Cathedral nearby served as the coronation church for the Kingdom of Hungary for close to three centuries. Spend the afternoon in the Old Town, Michael’s Gate and the pedestrian lanes around the main square, before the UFO Bridge (Most SNP) at sunset.

Day 2: Devín Castle and departure east

Devín Castle, about 12km west of the city where the Morava River meets the Danube on the Austrian border, is reachable by city bus 29 in half an hour; Napoleon’s forces destroyed it in 1809 and the cliffside ruins are dramatic. In the afternoon, start heading east toward central Slovakia.

Day 3: Bojnice Castle

Bojnice Castle is Slovakia’s fairytale castle, a late-19th-century Loire-style rebuild commissioned by Count Pálfi, and it is genuinely photogenic rather than just marketed that way. Spend the morning touring the interior and the surrounding park, then continue east toward the High Tatras for the evening.

Day 4: The High Tatras

From Tatranská Lomnica, the cable car climbs to Skalnaté Pleso and on to Lomnický štít at 2,634m, book ahead in summer as it fills up on clear days. The High Tatras are a genuinely alpine range, separate from the Low Tatras further south, weather turns fast at altitude, stick to marked trails, and the highest routes close from 1 November to 31 May. Brown bears are an active issue here, a fatal Low Tatras attack in March 2024 is why the standard advice is stay on-trail, avoid hiking after dark, and make noise on blind corners.

Day 5: Slovenský raj and Spiš Castle

Slovenský raj (Slovak Paradise) is a national park of limestone gorges fitted with ladders, chains and catwalks past waterfalls, a genuinely different hiking experience from the open Tatras ridgelines. In the afternoon, head to Spiš Castle , one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe by area and part of a UNESCO listing (ref 620bis) inscribed in 1993 and extended in 2009 to include nearby Levoča and Master Paul’s Gothic altar. The Upper Castle has been closed for renovation since early 2026, only the Middle and Lower courtyards are open, check current hours before you go.

Day 6: Košice and departure

Košice, Slovakia’s second city, has a genuinely different character from Bratislava. St Elisabeth’s Cathedral is the largest church in the country and the easternmost Gothic cathedral in Europe, and the city carried the title European Capital of Culture in 2013. Spend the morning in the old town before your departure from Košice Airport (KSC).
