Slovakia 5 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Five days is enough to work a real middle stop into the west-to-east crossing of Slovakia: Bratislava, then the UNESCO mining town of Banská Štiavnica in the center of the country, then two days in the High Tatras finishing at Spiš Castle. It is still a long trip end to end, Bratislava and the Tatras sit roughly 4 to 5 hours apart, so this plan treats the country as the road-trip it actually is rather than a single city break. And a naming note up front: Slovakia is not Slovenia, a different country entirely on the Adriatic, and it split peacefully from the Czech Republic on 1 January 1993.

Slovakia is in the EU, Schengen and the eurozone. ETIAS pre-travel screening is planned but not yet required as of 2026, while the EU’s Entry/Exit System is live and adds a short biometric check for non-EU arrivals at the border. A rental car makes this route far easier than public transport between the three regions; remember that a motorway e-vignette is mandatory, buy it online at eznamka.sk before you set out.

Book these before you go:

Day 1: Bratislava

Bratislava Castle sits above the Danube on its hill, the courtyard and terrace are free and give you a clean view over the river into Austria. St Martin’s Cathedral, close by, served as the coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary for close to three centuries. Round out the day walking the Old Town: Michael’s Gate, the last surviving medieval gate, and the pedestrian lanes around the main square, before an evening at the UFO Bridge (Most SNP) for sunset views over the city.

Day 2: Devín Castle, then east toward Banská Štiavnica

Start with Devín Castle, about 12km west of the city where the Morava River meets the Danube at the Austrian border, city bus 29 gets you there in half an hour; Napoleon’s forces destroyed it in 1809 and the cliffside ruins are dramatic. In the afternoon, head inland toward Banská Štiavnica, arriving in time for an early dinner and a first look at the town before the fuller day tomorrow.

Day 3: Banská Štiavnica

Banská Štiavnica is a UNESCO World Heritage historic mining town (inscribed 1993), its old center built up around centuries of silver and gold extraction, with the streets and squares still following the original medieval mining-town layout. Spend the day walking the town on foot, then continue east toward Poprad in the late afternoon or evening to set up for the High Tatras stretch of the trip.

Day 4: The High Tatras

From Tatranská Lomnica, the cable car climbs to Skalnaté Pleso and on to Lomnický štít at 2,634m, book ahead online since it fills up fast on clear summer days. If hiking is more your pace, Štrbské Pleso’s glacial-lake trails or the Hrebienok funicular routes from Starý Smokovec suit most fitness levels. The High Tatras are a genuinely alpine range, distinct from the Low Tatras further south, weather changes fast at altitude, stick to marked trails, and note that the highest routes close from 1 November to 31 May. Brown bears are an active issue in these mountains, a fatal Low Tatras attack in March 2024 is the reason guidance says stay on-trail, avoid hiking after dark, and make noise on blind corners.

Day 5: Spiš Castle and Levoča

Head roughly 30 to 40 minutes from Poprad to Spiš Castle , one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe by area and the anchor of a UNESCO listing (ref 620bis) inscribed in 1993 and extended in 2009 to include nearby Levoča, home to Master Paul’s Gothic altar, at roughly 18.62m the tallest wooden altar in the world. The castle’s Upper Castle has been closed for renovation since early 2026, only the Middle and Lower courtyards are open, check current hours before you drive out. Spend the afternoon in Levoča’s old town before departing via Poprad-Tatry or Košice.
