Book these before you go
- Petronas Twin Towers : timed entry, roughly 1,800 slots a day, closed Mondays; book 1-2 weeks ahead.
- MDAC (Malaysia Digital Arrival Card): free, mandatory, submit online 1-3 days before arrival, not on paper and not at the airport.
- Check Kuala Lumpur hotel rates : Bukit Bintang is the easiest first-timer base for this itinerary.
Day 1: Petronas and Bukit Bintang
Morning: Petronas Twin Towers, 452m, the world’s tallest twin towers. Your timed ticket covers the 41st-floor Skybridge and the 86th-floor observation deck, non-Malaysian admission runs roughly RM145-150 (~$33-34, verify).
Afternoon: KLCC Park, free, then the covered, air-conditioned walkway into Bukit Bintang’s shopping core around Pavilion and Lot 10.
Evening: Jalan Alor after dark for char kway teow and the dark, braised KL-style Hokkien mee; check posted prices before ordering.
Day 2: Colonial core and Chinatown
Morning: Merdeka Square, where independence was declared on 31 August 1957, then Masjid Jamek, KL’s oldest mosque (1909) at the river confluence where the city began. Free loaner robes; closed to non-Muslims on Fridays.
Afternoon: Petaling Street for haggling and street food, then Kwai Chai Hong, a restored 1950s-60s heritage art alley, free to wander.
Evening: Dinner in Chinatown or Bukit Bintang; carry your bag on the side away from the road, bag-snatching by motorcyclists is the real petty-crime risk here.
Day 3: Batu Caves and a choice of KL Tower or the National Mosque
Morning: Batu Caves, about 30-40 minutes out by KTM Komuter (~RM2.60). The 272 rainbow-painted steps lead to the 42.7m gold Murugan statue; the main Temple Cave itself is free, dress code enforced with free loaner robes. Watch your food around the macaques, and ignore anyone directing you to “official” paid parking.
Afternoon: Menara KL (KL Tower), 421m, a separate landmark from Petronas, tiers from around RM33/$7.50 up to the Sky Deck and Sky Box combo (around RM78/$18, verify); or Masjid Negara, the modernist National Mosque, next to the Islamic Arts Museum (around RM20, verify).
Day 4: Putrajaya day trip and Bangsar or Brickfields
Morning: Putrajaya, about 18 minutes each way by KLIA Transit, the lowest-effort day trip from KL. The pink Putra Mosque and lake gardens are the draw.
Afternoon: Brickfields for banana-leaf rice, eaten by hand, fold the leaf inward toward you when done, or Bangsar for café time.
Evening: Thean Hou Temple, a large six-tier Chinese temple with genuine skyline views and free entry.
Day 5: Genting Highlands
Full day: Genting Highlands, KL’s hill resort, about 1-1.5 hours by bus and cable car (check current 2026 cable-car maintenance schedules before you go, closures do happen). It’s noticeably cooler than the city, with a casino, SkyWorlds theme park, and the SkyWay cable car ride itself part of the experience. Budget the whole day given the travel time each way, and eat before you head back down, options in KL proper will already be winding down by a late return.
Is 5 days enough for Kuala Lumpur?
Five days fits the honest core, one easy day trip, and one full-day hill escape without padding. For a version that adds Melaka or Kuala Selangor’s fireflies, see our 6-day itinerary .
