Cairo 7 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Travel advisory: Egypt sits on the edge of the wider 2026 regional conflict involving Iran. The country is not a combatant, and Cairo, Giza, and the Nile Valley remain the normal, actively-visited tourist core, with 2026 tourism hitting record numbers. There has been limited spillover, including a July 2026 drone strike on ships at Damietta port in the north, far from any tourist site. At the time of writing the US State Department lists Egypt at Level 2 (“Exercise Increased Caution”), with “Do Not Travel” limited to the Sinai interior and the remote Western Desert, not the places in this guide. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking, since the situation is fluid.

Day 1: Giza Plateau
A full day at the Giza Plateau: the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, the Sphinx, and the free electric shuttle now used between the monuments (entry around 700 EGP, $14; going inside Khufu costs extra, roughly 1,000-1,500 EGP, verify). Agree any camel, horse, or photo price out loud before you commit.
Day 2: The Grand Egyptian Museum
GEM gets its own day. Fully open, with the complete Tutankhamun collection, all 5,398 objects, together for the first time, plus the Khufu Boat Museum and the hanging Ramesses II obelisk. Foreign adult admission runs around 1,450 EGP ($30), booked online only through tickets.gem.eg; open 9am to 6pm, until 9pm Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Day 3: Islamic Cairo, Part One
Morning at the Citadel of Saladin and Muhammad Ali Mosque (around 180 EGP combined), then Al-Azhar Mosque and Al-Azhar Park. Afternoon in Khan el-Khalili, with tea at El Fishawy Café, open since 1797.
Day 4: Islamic Cairo, Part Two
Al-Muizz Street (around 220 EGP combined access, best lit in the evening) and Bab Zuweila, then the Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa’i mosques, sharing a combined ticket (also around 220 EGP).
Day 5: Coptic Cairo and the Museums
Morning in Coptic Cairo: the Hanging Church, Ben Ezra Synagogue, and the Coptic Museum (around 200 EGP). Afternoon at NMEC for the Royal Mummies Hall (around 550 EGP, no photography inside the hall), then the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square for the roughly 100,000-item collection that stayed there (around 300-550 EGP, verify).
Day 6: Zamalek, Cairo Tower, and the City of the Dead
Walk Zamalek in the morning, then Cairo Tower for the skyline view. The City of the Dead is worth a respectful, guided visit in the afternoon; it’s a living, inhabited neighborhood among centuries-old tombs, not a ruin, and under demolition pressure in parts.
Day 7: Garden City, Maadi, and a Nile Farewell
A slower closing day. Walk riverside Garden City in the morning, then head out to leafy Maadi for a change of pace from the busier central neighborhoods, or use the morning for a second, unhurried pass through Khan el-Khalili if souvenir shopping is still unfinished. Close the trip with a Nile dinner cruise (roughly $35-50, Tanoura or belly-dance show included) or a cheaper felucca sail negotiated dockside.

Uber and Careem cover every cross-town move here, worth it given how notorious Cairo traffic gets at peak hours. The honest tip for a full week: this is exactly the point where Cairo and Beyond makes more sense than a longer stay in the city itself, Saqqara, Alexandria, and a fly-onward Luxor or Aswan leg all open up once the core is done.
