Cairo 5 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Travel advisory: Egypt sits on the edge of the wider 2026 regional conflict involving Iran. The country is not a combatant, and Cairo, Giza, and the Nile Valley remain the normal, actively-visited tourist core, with 2026 tourism hitting record numbers. There has been limited spillover, including a July 2026 drone strike on ships at Damietta port in the north, far from any tourist site. At the time of writing the US State Department lists Egypt at Level 2 (“Exercise Increased Caution”), with “Do Not Travel” limited to the Sinai interior and the remote Western Desert, not the places in this guide. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking, since the situation is fluid.

Day 1: Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum

Morning at the Giza Plateau (pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure, plus the Sphinx; entry around 700 EGP, $14; free electric shuttle between monuments; agree any camel or photo price out loud before you commit). Afternoon at the Grand Egyptian Museum, fully open with the complete Tutankhamun collection together for the first time, foreign adult admission around 1,450 EGP ($30), booked online only through tickets.gem.eg.

Day 2: Islamic Cairo, Part One

Morning at the Citadel of Saladin and Muhammad Ali Mosque (around 180 EGP combined), then Al-Azhar Mosque (970 CE, dress code enforced) and Al-Azhar Park for the skyline view. Afternoon in Khan el-Khalili, with tea at El Fishawy Café, open since 1797.

Day 3: Coptic Cairo and the Museums

Morning in Coptic Cairo: the Hanging Church, Ben Ezra Synagogue, and the Coptic Museum (around 200 EGP). Afternoon at NMEC for the Royal Mummies Hall (around 550 EGP, no photography inside the hall), then the older Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square for the roughly 100,000-item collection that stayed behind after GEM took the Tut pieces and NMEC took the mummies (around 300-550 EGP, verify).

Day 4: Islamic Cairo, Part Two

Al-Muizz Street, an open-air museum of Islamic architecture (around 220 EGP combined access, best lit in the evening), and Bab Zuweila, a Fatimid gate with a climbable minaret. In the afternoon, the Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa’i mosques, facing each other and sharing a combined ticket (also around 220 EGP).

Day 5: Zamalek, Cairo Tower, and the City of the Dead

Walk Zamalek in the morning, then Cairo Tower for one last skyline view. The City of the Dead is worth a respectful, guided visit if you have the afternoon; it’s a living, inhabited neighborhood among centuries-old tombs, not a ruin, and under demolition pressure in parts, so what’s there can change. Close the trip with a Nile dinner cruise (roughly $35-50, Tanoura or belly-dance show included) or a cheaper felucca sail negotiated dockside.
