Luxor Egypt Day Trips: 3 Day Itinerary

Three days based in Luxor covers both marquee day trips without rushing either: the dawn balloon and the Dendera and Abydos run from our 2 day plan , plus a full day at Edfu and Kom Ombo. It still isn’t enough for Aswan or the Nile cruise; those start at our 4 day plan and up. Same balloon-first opening as the 2 day version, one more long day trip added, back to an East Bank bed every night in between.

Day 1: the dawn balloon and getting oriented

Arrive in Luxor the evening before this trip starts. The balloon lifts off before sunrise from a dedicated West Bank airfield, 45-60 minutes over the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s Temple, and the green Nile-side fields, for roughly $40-100 per person. Book ahead and expect it to be grounded outright in wind. The honest history: a 2013 crash killed 19 people here, the deadliest hot air ballooning disaster on record, and regulation tightened hard afterward, a dedicated airfield, capped simultaneous flights, mandatory extra pilot training. It’s regarded as safe today, not risk-free. Spend the rest of the day confirming both remaining day trips and resting through the midday heat.

Day 2: Dendera and Abydos, the long day that earns its keep

Abydos sits 2.5-3 hours from Luxor via the Qena road, Dendera about an hour; most operators visit Abydos first, then Dendera on the way back, 9-10 hours round trip total. Dendera’s entrance runs roughly EGP 300 adult, 150 student, plus small EGP 100 add-ons for the roof and crypt. Abydos charges its own separate ticket; confirm the figure at the gate. A private car and driver for the full day runs EGP 1,500-2,500, roughly $30-50. Abydos rewards the drive: Seti I’s temple holds some of the best-preserved reliefs in Egypt, including the Abydos King List.

Day 3: Edfu and Kom Ombo, the second long day

Edfu’s Temple of Horus runs EGP 550 adult, 275 student; Kom Ombo, the double temple of Sobek and Haroeris, runs EGP 450 adult, 225 student, both official 2026 rates confirmed against the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities fee schedule . Doing them as a standalone Luxor day trip is another 9-10 hour round trip, mostly driving. Most travelers see these two on the way to Aswan instead, either overland or on the Nile cruise; at three days you don’t have that option yet, so the day trip is the only way to see either site this time.

Is three days enough to add Edfu and Kom Ombo?

Yes, comfortably, as long as you accept two long driving days back to back. The sites themselves take two to three hours combined; the drive is what eats the day. Should Edfu and Kom Ombo be a day trip or a cruise stop?

At three days, a day trip, because the cruise isn’t an option yet at this length. Past four days, the math flips: a cruise covers the same two temples plus Aswan and the Esna Lock for roughly the same money once you add up two separate drivers and the day tours you’d otherwise book.

Carry a working Visa or Mastercard for both day trips. Most site gates went card only in 2026, and cash covers little beyond tips and a driver’s fuel stop.
