Brasília 6 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Six days is where you stop having to choose between Pirenópolis and Chapada dos Veadeiros and just do both, each on its own honest schedule. This keeps the same three civic-core days as our 3-day itinerary , adds the Pirenópolis day trip from our 4-day itinerary , then the two-day Chapada dos Veadeiros overnight from our 5-day itinerary . A rental car earns its keep across all three of the last three days.

Book these before you go
- Rental car for Brasília : both Pirenópolis and Chapada dos Veadeiros need one, and a single multi-day rental beats two separate bookings.
- A guide for Chapada dos Veadeiros: mandatory inside the park (roughly R$100/group of up to 10, verify current rates); arrange it through your São Jorge or Alto Paraíso lodging before day 5.
- Check Brasília hotel rates on Booking.com for the city nights, and book São Jorge or Alto Paraíso lodging separately for the Chapada leg.
Day 1: Praça dos Três Poderes and the Cathedral
Morning: Praça dos Três Poderes, the heart of Lúcio Costa’s UNESCO-listed plan, framing the Executive (Palácio do Planalto), Legislative (National Congress), and Judiciary (Supreme Federal Court). Free, 30-45 minutes. A Sunday gets you inside the Planalto via its free 9:30am-2pm walk-up tour; otherwise it’s exterior-only. Congress tours reportedly run from the Salão Negro (reconfirm at congressonacional.leg.br ); skip any confident claim about which twin shape hides which chamber, since Brazilian sources contradict each other on that point.
Midday: Comida por quilo in Asa Sul or Asa Norte, R$20-75/kg.
Afternoon: Cathedral of Brasília at midday for the best stained-glass light, then Itamaraty Palace: guided-tour-only inside, but the Burle Marx water garden outside stands on its own.
Evening: Ponte JK at sunset, dinner along the Orla JK (Setor de Clubes Esportivos Sul).
Day 2: Paranoá loop and the northern axis
Morning: Palácio da Alvorada, exterior-only from a Lake Paranoá loop drive, then JK Memorial, Niemeyer’s mausoleum for the president who raised this city from empty cerrado in under four years. Tue-Sun, 9am-6pm.
Afternoon: TV Tower, ideally on a weekend for the Feira da Torre craft fair and the Luminous Fountain’s evening light show.
Evening: Santuário Dom Bosco, the blue-glass church with 80 Gothic-arch columns, free and far less crowded than the Cathedral.
Day 3: Brasília National Park and the museum complex
Morning: Brasília National Park (“Água Mineral”), spring-fed pools and cerrado trails.
Afternoon: National Museum and National Library, twin Niemeyer domes. Free time afterward for Parque da Cidade or a last comida por quilo round before an early night ahead of Pirenópolis.
Day 4: Pirenópolis day trip
Full day: Pirenópolis, roughly 150km and a two-hour drive out, is a colonial gold-mining town founded in 1727 with an IPHAN-listed historic center and more than 20 waterfalls within 15km, inside Pirineus State Park. Pick one or two falls rather than chasing all of them. Lunch in town at a simple Goiás-style kitchen, and if your dates land roughly 45 days after Easter, the Cavalhadas festival (verify exact date) fills the town with its centuries-old mock-battle pageant. Head back to Brasília by early evening.
Day 5: Drive to Chapada dos Veadeiros
Morning: Set off early for São Jorge, roughly 230km and 3 hours via BR-010/GO-118/GO-239. Buses run to the base town Alto Paraíso, about 20km short, if you’re not driving.
Afternoon: Check into São Jorge or Alto Paraíso, then, if there’s time, walk to Vale da Lua, separate private land near São Jorge with a striking rock formation along the Rio São Miguel.
Evening: A simple dinner in São Jorge or Alto Paraíso; small base town, not a resort.
Day 6: Guided hike and the drive back
Morning: A licensed guide is mandatory inside Chapada dos Veadeiros, a separate 2001 UNESCO natural listing from Brasília’s own 1987 cultural one. The signature sight is Rio Preto Falls, a 120m drop along one of two marked routes; entry runs roughly 8am-5pm (verify current hours and per-attraction fees).
Afternoon: Drive back to Brasília, roughly 3 hours, aiming to arrive before dark.
Is 6 days enough for Brasília?
Six days fits the full civic core plus both real trips out of the city, Pirenópolis and a proper Chapada dos Veadeiros overnight, without rushing any of the three. Beyond six days, the honest move is to keep going into wider Goiás, Cidade de Goiás or Caldas Novas, rather than padding more city-only content: our 7-day itinerary frames that extra day plainly.
