Brasília 4 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Four days is the sweet spot for one real day trip on top of the civic core, without stretching into the two-day commitment a Chapada dos Veadeiros overnight actually needs. This follows our 3-day itinerary (Praça dos Três Poderes, Cathedral, Itamaraty, TV Tower, Santuário Dom Bosco, Brasília National Park) and adds a full day out to Pirenópolis, a colonial gold-mining town with waterfalls on its doorstep. Rideshare or a rental car handles the city days; a rental car is the better call for Pirenópolis specifically. Want the bigger nature trip instead? Book these before you go
- Rental car for Brasília : needed for Pirenópolis regardless of how you get around the city itself.
- Check Brasília hotel rates on Booking.com : weekday rates run higher on government travel, so weekends inside your four days usually cost less.
- If Pirenópolis’s Cavalhadas festival (roughly 45 days after Easter) lines up with your dates, book both the drive and any Pirenópolis lodging well ahead: the town fills fast that week.
Day 1: Praça dos Três Poderes and the Cathedral
Morning: Praça dos Três Poderes, framing the Executive (Palácio do Planalto), Legislative (National Congress), and Judiciary (Supreme Federal Court) of Lúcio Costa’s UNESCO-listed plan. Free, 30-45 minutes. A Sunday puts you inside the Planalto via its free 9:30am-2pm walk-up tour; any other day is exterior-only. Congress tours reportedly run from the Salão Negro (reconfirm at congressonacional.leg.br ), but skip any confident claim about which twin shape hides which chamber: that detail is disputed even among Brazilian sources.
Midday: Comida por quilo in Asa Sul or Asa Norte, R$20-75/kg.
Afternoon: Cathedral of Brasília at midday for the best stained-glass light, then Itamaraty Palace: guided-tour-only inside, but the Burle Marx water garden outside is worth the stop on its own.
Evening: Ponte JK at sunset, dinner along the Orla JK (Setor de Clubes Esportivos Sul).
Day 2: Paranoá loop and the northern axis
Morning: Palácio da Alvorada, exterior view only from a Lake Paranoá loop drive, then JK Memorial, Niemeyer’s mausoleum for the president who built this city from cerrado scrub in under four years. Tue-Sun, 9am-6pm.
Midday: Lunch near the Eixo Monumental, or a Saturday feijoada with live samba if the day lines up.
Afternoon: TV Tower, ideally on a weekend for the Feira da Torre craft fair and the Luminous Fountain’s evening light show.
Evening: Santuário Dom Bosco, the blue-glass church with 80 Gothic-arch columns, free and far less crowded than the Cathedral.
Day 3: Brasília National Park and the museum complex
Morning: Brasília National Park (“Água Mineral”), spring-fed pools and cerrado trails on the edge of the city.
Afternoon: National Museum and National Library, twin Niemeyer domes; the Museum’s rotating exhibitions vary in quality, the Library’s building is the constant. Free time afterward for Parque da Cidade or one more comida por quilo round.
Evening: A relaxed dinner ahead of an early start for Pirenópolis.
Day 4: Pirenópolis day trip
Full day: Pirenópolis, roughly 150km and a two-hour drive out, is a colonial gold-mining town founded in 1727 with an IPHAN-listed historic center. More than 20 waterfalls sit within 15km of town, inside Pirineus State Park, so pick one or two rather than trying to hit them all in a single day. Walk the cobbled center, and if your dates land roughly 45 days after Easter, the Cavalhadas festival (verify the exact 2026/2027 date) fills the town with a centuries-old mock-battle pageant on horseback. Lunch in town at a simple Goiás-style kitchen rather than anywhere aimed at tour buses. Head back to Brasília by early evening: it’s a comfortable single-day round trip, unlike Chapada dos Veadeiros further out.
Is 4 days enough for Brasília?
Four days lets you do the civic core properly and still fit one genuine day trip without rushing either half. It’s the honest ceiling for a single-day-trip visit: Chapada dos Veadeiros, the region’s marquee nature trip, needs an overnight to do its guided hikes justice, which is why it doesn’t appear here.
