Gold leaf on a marble sanctum in the middle of a sacred pool sounds like a postcard cliche until you’re standing barefoot on cool stone at dawn, watching the first hymn of the day drift across the water. Six days is our 5-day itinerary plus a genuine day trip out to Sri Ram Tirath or Pul Kanjari, enough time to slow down without padding the schedule.

Know these before you go
- Confirm Wagah’s current status before day 3; it may be suspended.
- Sri Ram Tirath is a lower-key, mostly-domestic-pilgrim site; confirm current opening hours and any annual fair dates locally before day 6.
- Check hotel rates in Amritsar : six nights is worth pricing against the old city’s SGPC-run pilgrim sarais for part of the stay.
Day 1: Golden Temple and the old city
Morning: Check in near the Golden Temple. Cover your head, shoes off at the free cloakroom, walk the marble parikrama.
Afternoon: The Langar Hall, free, and the Akal Takht.
Evening: The temple lit after dark, dinner in the old city.
Day 2: Jallianwala Bagh and the Partition Museum
Morning: Jallianwala Bagh, free entry, the preserved bullet-marked walls and Martyrs’ Well.
Midday: The Partition Museum, token entry (verify current fee), 14 galleries.
Afternoon: Hall Bazaar shopping.
Day 3: Wagah-Attari, or Durgiana Temple
Late afternoon: Wagah if current status confirms it’s running, roughly 28-32km west, 90 minutes early with photo ID. Durgiana Temple otherwise, free entry.
Day 4: Gobindgarh Fort and Ram Bagh
Afternoon-evening: Gobindgarh Fort’s 7D show and evening projection display; Ram Bagh’s garden and Ranjit Singh Museum earlier in the day.
Day 5: a slower day
Morning-afternoon: Whatever’s left on your list, or simply the old city with no fixed plan.
Evening: Kesar Da Dhaba near Chowk Passian, running since 1916, dal makhani and phirni; a meal for two runs roughly 400-700 INR.
Day 6: Sri Ram Tirath or Pul Kanjari
Full day: Sri Ram Tirath, outside the city, a Hindu pilgrimage site traditionally tied to sage Valmiki’s ashram and, in local tradition, the birthplace legend of Lava and Kusha from the Ramayana, a genuinely quieter, mostly-domestic-pilgrim experience. Alternatively, Pul Kanjari, a restored 19th-century garrison town near the border, offers a lower-key border-area stop that doesn’t depend on the Wagah ceremony’s schedule. Confirm current access and hours for either locally before committing the day.
Which 6-day split actually works?
Five city days plus one genuine day trip gives you the holy-city core, the region’s history, and a slower pace than a rushed four-day version without needing a full week. If you want the fuller week, with a second day trip added, our 7-day itinerary covers it.
